THE INQUISITIVE MIND OF A CHILD

A Poem for Remembrance Day

Why are they selling poppies, Mummy?

Selling poppies in town today.

The poppies, child, are flowers of love.

For the men who marched away.

But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy?

Why not a beautiful rose?

Because my child, men fought and died

In the fields where the poppies grow.

But why are the poppies so red, Mummy?

Why are the poppies so red?

Red is the colour of blood, my child.

The blood that our soldiers shed.

The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy.

Why does it have to be black?

Black, my child, is the symbol of grief.

For the men who never came back.

But why, Mummy are you crying so?

Your tears are giving you pain.

My tears are my fears for you my child.

I

For the world is forgetting again!

The service and sacrifices made and given by those of the services, be they armed forces, police, fire or ambulance. Where others put themselves in danger so we can live our lives as we do are greatly appreciated by us and such a poignant poem for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

What freedim was that? The freedom to have opposing views or not? And the poppy now is about more than remembering the two world wars, it is also about those who took part in questionable conflicts and outright murder in different parts of the world .Turning a blind eye to this is insulting those who died during those two terrible conflicts.

Money raised from the poppy appeal goes to soldiers who have served in recent times. As someone from the six counties I would not want any of my money going to soldiers who have been responsible for crimes here. Nor would I commemorate those British soldiers who died here. No problem with others doing it but we have the right not too.

On here and other social media.

Presenting themselves as victims of people who would deny them their freedom to wear a poppy.

Yet I never once do I see or hear anyone ever make any such argument.

Grateful and humbled to see admin. put the Poppy on the site each year. It means so much to those of us serving and who have served, more so those of us who've lost friends along the way. I'll forever also remember my next door neighbour, now long gone - a tough but gentle man who had been at Arnhem Bridge. Forever an inspiration to me.

So many missed, but always remembered - every day, not just the one day.

Thank you to all who ensure the Poppy remains the symbol it was always meant to be.
