Herpes & stigma

Hey guys,

Serious question here, its estimated 70% of the uk carry the herpes virus hsv-1 or hsv-2, 1 in four carry it, and every 3 people who do have it, only one shows signs. It doesnt always show in std/sti tests, and it can can give positive-negative effects even when screening for antibodies. Condoms can still not stop it spreading via skin to skin contact.

So with that in mind why is it when your open to people and say we are aware we have “coldsores” etc does it put so many people off and get branded as “disgusting” . Its been around for around 2000 years and yet the majority or people who think its a disease and disgusting probably have it too but have never shown signs.

So why does it bother people so much?

Probably bothers people because theres no cure for it. No one wants herpes in any form.

But most people could have it, show no signs, never have a coldsore or flare up and spread it without knowing so how can they be worried when its nearly impossible to diagnose if you have no visible blisters? Which again doesnt even have to show as a blister, could be a small red spot, a scratch, an ache in the leg , no one can 100% be sure they dont carry it

There are lots of different forms of the herpes virus. Chicken pox is caused by one and the correct name for shingles is herpes zoster. It's because hsv-2 is usually spread by sexual contact that it was historically stigmatized and remains so to this day. It's not just herpes, any STI caries stigma.

Some people have immunity, it's not known why. Could be from other strains of the virus caught as an infant or child.

I'm pretty sure you are incorrect. People can be asymptomatic but they are still carriers, not immune. If they were immune they would be unable to contract the virus.

It’s very brave of you to admit you have herpes...

Maybe this post will give others the courage to come out of the Herpes closet...

Do you understand how vaccination works? Inoculation from strains of viruses prevent you catching strains in which are worse?

The very reason parents encourage you catching chicken pox as a child, because as an adult it's effect is much worse and causes sterility

Viruses evolve but for most they have immunity from catching a similar strain. Doesn't always work like with the flu virus which evolves rapidly and changing physical structure which it prevents your cells from attacking it resulting in no immunity. Also not all antibodies stay with you and produced less over time till your body stops producing any if there is no viral attack. Which is why people get booster vaccines.

Different viruses respond differently, theres smart virues and theres stupid viruses. Flu virus is highly evolved and continues to do so maximising spread and effect also blocking current host immunity preventing cells from attacking. There's viruses which attack the bodily hastily and kill the host too quick before spread of the virus not exactly a clever virus.

For many a different strain can have the same physical structure but it can attack the host differently but the hosts immune system will tackle it the same as other strains.

Trying to explain this in simplest form without diagrams well there we go. Feel free to go read up and look at pretty pictures on immunology and virology heck check out parasitology while you're at it. All fun if you like learning shit.

One day the simple cold virus will probably wipe out the whole world.

To be honest, more people should, its not life threatening, and you still carry on a normal life, after a while you very rarely have outbreaks.

You can only catch it once, so all those people who has coldsores (herpes) as a child you dont have to worry your body has built immunity to it.

Its best to be honest, then hide it and someone gets an itch thinking there life is over

Partially true, in women it's more effective than men. Not all cold sores are hpv1 but hpv2.

In women infected with hpv1 can produce immunity to both. But catching hpv2 is found in women to likely have immunity to both so decreasing the possibly of catching hpv1 after catching hpv2 but it's not fully known as to whether the several other strains can prevent infection. Lack of studies on the herpes viruses. In the US most infants catch roseola but only 48% of the population have hpv1. Where as roseola in the UK isn't as common and we have higher rate of hpv1 over 2 thirds of the population. Add that to the other hhpv viruses. Since it isn't life threatening to most except newborns and immunocompromised people their is little studies on all the strains hhpv

Yes so people need not to worry, or treat us any differently for all anyone knows we could of had this for many years, it can lay dormant. Doest mean we will pass it on etc
