Don't know if anyone can help.me here. Someone I meet sometimes gets severe, migraine-type headaches when she reaches orgasm. She describes it as having a band around her head that's gradually bring tightened. This causes discomfort and distress.

Of course, I've suggested going to the doctor, but she won't. Does anyone have experience of this or can someone offer any advice?

Unless she goes the problem will continue. The GP will be able to prescribe something. I've had maxalt and sumatriptan prescribed by my GP for migraines.

My ex used to get this on climax. It's a tension thing. They can medicate for it temporarily til her body learns to relax. It's a game changer. Tell her to see the GP - it's fairly common apparently x

If she doesn't seek medical help, she will eventually stop having sex if it gives her pain at the end. Or she will stop before reaching orgasm and that way she might not enjoy the act.

Yes i have experience. They are called true coital or post coital headaches depending if you get them during or after. They are caused by the rise in blood pressure due to being so turned on. First time i had one thought i was having a hemmerage and was going to die. What i did was for a while was stopped doing the positions that turned me on the most. Then i reintroduced them but used to take two pain killers before sex and start to slow things down if i felt one coming on after a few years it seemed to work and ive not had one in a long time now. You can look up true and post coital headaches and see what advice they give

I had this once it scared the heck out of me so I went straight to the doctors. She was useless I'm sure she was Googling it whilst I was there,all she said was if it happens again come back. Thankfully it didn't,I think it was all the stress of moving into a new house at the time. I thought I had a brain tumour.

This has begun to happen me recently. First time was so severe I ended up in hospital for brain scan as doc thought it was brain bleed. Thankfully wasn't. On meds now & very rarely happens. Doc told me it's not uncommon. I was very embarressed explaining what I was doing when I got headache!!! But everyone was very understanding. So try to get her to see GP.

I hope things improve for her xx

Wow I am delighted to see this thread as I felt so alone with this problem.

I had this last year! Terrified me...never felt pain like it and curled up on side moaning in pain for an hour. It happened at every orgasm. My gp put me on propranalol -

an anti-depressant that is known to work on migraines. It stopped them within 2 days. I decreased the dose over a month and now they have gone altogther.I believe they are known as coital, or 'thunderclap' headaches Thank god they are gone.xx

I know I’m a man but I went through a spat of these recently I have been diagnosed with anxiety. Once I was put on medication these headaches stopped. Your wife needs to see her GP it’s very common.

GP wasn’t interested when I told her about it. She just smiled and said enjoy having fun.

It’s not like a normal headache as it’s to do with the blood flow during an orgasm. I’d suggest drinking plenty fluid before and after sex.

I had a male friend who would temporarily lose his sight after an intense orgasm.

If she knows your here show her this thread, otherwise search up the terms described on Google and pass it on. Maybe once she realises it's not uncommon she will feel better about seeking help

Is she on the pill? That can sometimes contribute/cause climax headaches.

I used to suffer with these and my GP suggested changing to an IUD. I've never suffered with one since.

Of course that's only my experience but i thought it might be worth a share to someone.

As a number of people here have stated it's related to blood pressure and can be debilitating if she doesn't seek medical help..a simple beta blocker was prescribed for me and solved the issue totally....bit it could also be a hint at underlying conditions best to seek professional medical advice...

I also suffer, my gp was lovely although she had never heard of it she went away and did her research.

I now have migraine tablets that I take if I feel it coming. It normally starts as a knot at the base of my skull and I get about a 2 minute warning if I continue it will explode.

I find edging brings it on in particular. So always the excuse to not be kept waiting for an orgasm.

I have suffered from time to time with these and the pain is excruciating. I used to take an ibruprofen tablet before sex and found this helped a lot. I looked it up in the big G interweb

I get this sometimes, especially in forced multiple orgasm situations.

For me is generally short lived.

I try to keep hydrated and relaxed to avoid, but is hard to keep hydrated enough.

My Ex used to get this all the time, it was suggested to her to have the ‘Daith Piercing” which is part of the ear & I swear she never had a headache from orgasm again. She loved the fact she could orgasm without worrying about the headaches and actually encouraged her to have more and more orgasms. Which for me at the time was great....

Yep, had this a few years ago in very hot bedroom, brought on a migraine that lasted a few days. I didn’t know it was a thing, so just put it down to dehydration and lack of calories, which are generally the cause of my migraine attacks. Since then I’ve made sure I’m well hydrated before having sex and have been fine.

You might try this approach, but a GP appointment is the really sensible thing and I’d encourage your friend to go, as everyone else here has.

A few years ago it started happening to me, put me off doing anything for a while as the pain was so severe. I never went to a GP or anything and it just stopped. It's not a nice experience

Yes these are coital migraines i suffered from them with one of my partners ,sex was always amazing with her and i until these started ,so went to the doctors and as one of the previous comments made i had to have a lumber puncture into my spinal cord,an MRI scan and other more comfortable tests in hospital over a 3 day period,they checked for bleeds on the brain and so on,got the all clear but if i know im going to have a really good sex session iv got to take pain killers before i do or sometimes afterwards,you need to go to your doctors dont be embarrassed best to be safe than sorry

I have cervical stenosis and had head pains if my head went too far back during orgasm. Sooner something like that gets diagnosed the better. Not saying she has that but with most things the earlier they find it the sooner they can treat it or prevent it from getting worse.
