Have had a couple of emails from unknown address claiming they have had control of my webcam and seen me "watching" particular websites..lol

Wouldn't take any notice normally but they have quoted part of one of my passwords, actually all the letters of a word plus number password.

Claiming they want cash before showing a clip of me online.

Nothing too major but still embarrassed if it was in the public domain.

Thinking of just ignoring it as don't really want any authority involved for obvious reasons.

Any thoughts?

My ex had this happen to him. He just ignored it . Change all of your passwords and forget about it.

We don't bother with the disclaimer that, let's be honest, no one is gonna either read,or give a rats arse about. That people put on their profiles.

They almost certainly haven't got anything. I get e-mails like this when the cam on my computer has a piece of tape over it and is now broken. If they had something they'd show it to you to apply pressure.

You should remember, these people don't have a customer service department. They don't give I flying shit about you. They want money. You have absolutely no guarantee whatsoever that they have what they say they have or will do what they say they will do, before or after you pay. Once you start they will never stop if they see pound signs.

The chances anybody would be interested in viewing what they say they have is also very small.

I very rarely check our adult email account, it's not linked to anything else.

If they quoted a password either it's been gotten from a hacked site that you registered with, or you have installed malware on your machine which has been designed to grab passwords.

Do the following.

1. Install "malwarebytes anti malware" on your machine and run a scan. Deal with any issues. You can also install the same. App on your smartphone. Do not assume that the password grab came from a computer. It could be a phone that's compromised.

2. Run a scan of your existing antivirus if you have one.

3. Change all your passwords. Particularly if you have the habit of using the same password on multiple sites.

Yeh, i had this also, shit myself at first then realised it was just a scam and never answered and just ignored, heard nowt since, it's just a blanket threat they post out hoping someone will think it applies to them and take the bait !!

Go to 'have I been pwned' put in your email and see the results.

Exactly what a previous poster has said, I doubt they have anything but even if they did it's money they're after and you won't be the only person they're targeting.

Next email delete immediately, they'll soon get the message

Laugh it off. Tell them if they prove they have the video of you watching websites you may consider paying them I bet they can't provide the evidence.

Yeah it's a new version of an old email scam. Normally you'd ignore it, but it does make you take a second look when it quotes your password

. These are old passwords found on the net from hacked sites (normally you are asked to change them when it happens ie this happened to playstation )

Don't ever reply to them... if you reply it verifies that the email is used & monitored, hence worth attacking.

It's a scam, my mum received one recently and it scared her, just ignore it.

It’s only a scam with a password stolen from other website and no video. I tend to forward the email to the police but I don’t think they are doing enough to stop spammers..

Yep, periodically get the same sort of thing, I just delete them.

Google for 'Have I been pawned' to check if your email address is one of those.
