"What is a VPN?"

Virtual private network for accessing sites securely and hiding where you really are.

Think the question was in relation to age verification for UK porn sites.

If you use a VPN to appear to be outside the UK you won't have to verify your age.

My understanding reading the news were major porn sites would be blocked. Seeing as Fab isn't a porn site I thought it would be ok.

Hope it helps.

A vpn won’t work. The government are much more sophisticated than you’d imagine.

The new law is about providers of adult content needing to ensure that people viewing that content are of legal age. So a VPN won't help - you will still need to prove your age. Unless of course the site is hosted in a country that is outside of the jurisdiction or doesn't care.

It's a farce really as we will see two things:

-content providers moving content to places like the Philippines where they get away with anything

- a massive rise in data breaches like we saw with Ashley Madison as so many companies will be holding age verification data.

It's been terribly badly thought through.

This is the same as the 4G service providers who automatically content block you on a weekend and only offer working hours support thus screwing up your entire weekend because you have no fab.

Perhaps our government should spend more time getting our IT infrastructure up to third world standards rather than turning us into a police state.

The most common expected model for verification will be a shop bought "Age Verification Card" where you will need to provide propper ID to purchase the card, thus negating the need to share your personal details with the world... like PayPal does for payment details.

Assuming the sites you want to visit don't block VPN traffic (or are compelled to)

It's one of the most ridiculous laws this country has ever passed. We become the sole country with this law, so yes a VPN will allow you to visit a site that hasn't implemented age checks and therefore would otherwise have been blocked by UK internet providers. But the UK adult market is large and therefore some providers may still put the checks in place. Your VPN doesn't help then so you'll still need an age verification card or a credit card etc.

Exactly! A VPN changes your IP address to match the country of your choice! It will definitely get past this new law, in fact the government even acknowledges that it will and that they don’t intend to prevent it (probably because they cant!). Nordvpn is good, its around 2.50 a month if you sign up to the 3 year plan.

Don't worry about VPN, you'll be able to go into a shop with passport or driving license buy a age verification card you can use. Should be a one off cost Vs monthly payment to VPN

Where is FAB hosted? If it's in the UK it could possibly be forced to age verify even American traffic, but that is only if FAB is a porn site.

I would say wait and see what happens, then find a way through if you need to.

Will each site need age verification or just each isp?

If it's an isp then it could just be a one time verification for any adult content.

I'll admit not being paying close attention to this one

This is the government which thinks they've banned the pirate bay.... Took me all of ten seconds to get past the "ban".

Now i don't have any issues with proving my age by subscribing to Fab, due example, but if you prefer.... A VPN is the easiest route. Appear to be accessing fab from outside the UK and you won't need to do any she verification.

Dumb law to please Dailly Mail readers who cunt understand how the Web works.

Tor or a VPN make it look like you are accessing the Internet from somewhere other than the UK.

Since age verification only applies to people in the UK using sites with adult content, it seems clear that Tor or a VPN will work.

You don't have to access the dark Web, it's not a compulsory requirement.

You can just access legit sites like any other browser.

You can download opera with inbuilt VPN for pc and that's free, you are able to route your location to America, Europe or Asia. Tunnelbear is cool too. You can also download opera from the play store and access fab there when your network provider has adult content blocked

Simple change network provider...explaining you pay to access the Internet, not be policed by them.

VPN - don’t install any browser based, they are tracking you. Decent VPN, Let’s you access without tracing/marketing tracking, using whatever browser you use now.

I know how tor and vpn work, but I don't know if Fab is included in the porn site category, or if Fab is hosted in the UK and the government intends to age verify to everyone on UK sites.

So I have no idea if tor or vpn will get around whatever obsticle may or may not be put in in July.

Adult content is not included in the age verification criteria, if it is then Facebook and Google would require age verification.

The same adult content and cams criteria would apply to Facebook, and just about every social media system in existence these days.

We need to wait for official definition before finding ways around blocks that may not happen.
