Thinking of hiring a boat for my birthday, cheeky few drinks canal side, just wondered if anyone had experience of canal boats/small boats & if easy to manoeuvre.

Just spent a month sailing in the Caribbean. Plenty of fun had!

Unless you act like an imbecile it's hard to go wrong with a canal boat. I've had loads of great holidays on them over the years and I'm slowly saving for my own. For me, there's no better way to relax.

They are not hard to helm but very different to driving a car, it takes time for things to happen after moving the tiller and no brakes.

The long 40ft plus narrow boats can be tricky if it's a windy day and you're inexperienced.

It's part of my entertainment watching holiday makers being swept around a canal basin desperately trying to avoid hitting the plastic cruisers.

Bit boring for me for a birthday treat but enjoy if you do hire one.
