I've just been told some guy based in London has stolen all my profile text, just changed a couple of words and used it all in his profile, word for word.

Is there some rule on this? Surely it's akin to stealing photos?

I know his username but he doesn't show up in a search.

A friend of mine on here confronted him about it and he's now hidden his profile. She can see it but I can't. Any advice?

Yep, that has happened to us before from a tv/ts.

Pretty annoying as the same prat even used to copy our updates, we blocked them and re wrote our profile.

Not sure what else you can do other than think of it as a massive compliment that they think your words are so much better than anything they can think up.

Well no, it doesn't have any direct admin, but it's not cool all the same. He's even used direct quotes from mine about himself so it's all lies!

It happened to me they used every word. Also on a friends profile they took everything including his photos. Only way I knew this was the fake male contacted me, silly git. Just report to admin go to bottom of your profile right at bottom and tell them they will sort it out. Good luck.

It’s happened to me.

I was able to message them and ask kindly but firmly to change their copy.

They did and it was all solved.

Sometimes an approach of “I understand why you did it, I’m flattered, but I’m sure you’d rather be original” works better than full on confrontation.

Pop a report in. Admin may act on it, you never know.

There are a lot of profiles that contain very similar content - it's the nature of sites like this and when people post threads looking for advice they're often told to look at successful profiles for inspiration. Word for word copying is lazy - but it will always be the individual actions that matter.

Anyone can copy some words. But creating an interesting message and maintaining someone's interest is a lot harder. And if they couldn't come up with their own profile content you can bet their conversational skills will let them down in minutes.

Thanks all. I like to think I'm pretty experienced at all this malarky, and don't usually as for advice on any subject, this was a new one on me though.

I'm aware we don't own anything we put on profiles, whether that be text or photos so it's all open to abuse. I'm also aware those pointless warnings people post on their profiles are entirely without any legal grounding, and that there's essentially nothing to say that people can't nick whatever they want from a profile, it's just irritating that this guy is using every single word, apart from his location.

He's even used the direct quote on mine which my ex girlfriend said about me so it feels like a bit of a personal theft!

Yes it is now illegal to claim to be someone else using their images by law and serious repercussions can be dealt them. But getting a hard on and getting it out in front of a packed court room might be a tad much to prove it

Is it? Where are you getting that information from? I was under the impression that things we post on a site like this are essentially public property, or owned by the site owner? We give up those rights the moment we post them - at least that's my understanding.

I haven't seen anything on Fab that proves or disproves this so if you can show me something, I'd be very interested to read it.

UK copyright law assigns copyright to the creator of any work - photos, music, art, literature. You don't have to mark it in any way - it's automatically assigned at the time you create it. Google the copyright, designs and patents act 1988.

Actually getting someone to stop using your work and having it removed from the internet is the hard part though.

It's easy to prove someone's done it. But expensive to chase through the courts for any recompense or even a simple apology.

My understanding was sort of this (and I'm aware it wasn't Fab law as mentioned above, I'm not a total idiot!), that Internet posting was nigh on impossible to prove one way or another, hence my asking you (the lady above) to show me something to prove your point.

The vast majority of nonsense people write on the bottom of their profiles about legal infringements, and so forth are complete tosh in my view. As Obi says, it's almost impossible to prove.

It's a bit like claiming your Facebook posts are your property, when they're absolutely not. Again, as Obi mentions, the copyright act of 1988 is one thing, but proving that with regard to Internet posting is something altogether different.

There's a big misconception that uploading anything there (or insta) signs over any rights. It doesn't. You're effectively granting facebook the right to use anything uploaded - effectively just saying they can display it anywhere on site - not anyone else. It doesn't become public property and automatically eligible to be used by all and sundry.

It's easy to get stuff taken down from social media. You just have to provide evidence that it's your work and the original source. FB and Insta have simple copyright infringement forms and are pretty quick to remove unauthorised content.

It's much harder to get stuff removed from the wider internet though.

That’s not strictly true either. There has to be something unique about it , for example a poem an artistic photo. Otherwise the first person who wrote merry Christmas on a Christmas card could claim everyone is breaching copyright.

Because if you read my profile, it has a lot of information which is very much specific to me personally, so yeah it does bother me that it's been used word for word to describe someone else on here.

He's using my description to describe himself, which is complete lies on his behalf. He tried to dupe a friend of mine into sleeping with him, and I don't think that's a acceptable way to behave.

It's the same as stealing photos in my view.

It happened to me but a man stole it rather than another woman which i found a bit odd..by the time i found out I'd already rewritten my profile so i messaged him and asked him why he did it..

His response was he liked the way it was written and he had just joined and needed to have something eyecatching..i took it as a compliment

Same happened to us a while ago. A couple messaged us so we checked their profile and thought I was reading ours. Was annoying as our profile relates specifically to what we like and expect . But as they weren't from our area we let it go .

Admin's approach is their own and they don't communicate about how they do things nor the outcomes etc. Users may be under observation for many things with, probably, copying of your profile text one of the least important aspects (not to belittle what they've done, as it would bother me too). My first thoughts are that somone who would do such a thing and brag about it to others, may be involved in other aspects of deceit.

I had this happen a while ago, but don't remember if it was here or at another site - my entire profile text appeared word-for-word on another male's profile...

....I can't recall how I even became aware of it - but I messaged them advising I was reporting it to the site admin and the text was altered within a hour...

....not by much, though - so I reported it, and the profile had disappeared completely the next day...

I'm not being flippant in anyway but actually thinking about it would be quite hard for admin to do anything about this.

It would be hard to prove who had the profile text first.

What I mean is the other guy could very easily say that it was you that copied it.

I don't think for a second that's the case but I guess it would be tricky for admin.

This is why men shouldn’t give profile advice to new male members....

If they are not smart enough to figure out how to write a profile ... then they will do the next best thing....

Steal your profile and use your words to get a leg up on you....

I’m going to start giving nothing but bad advice to new members from now on....
