I was described this week as a middle aged man in stockings and a wig. So, would be interested in hearing some advice in making myself more womanly, I know it's won't be easy. I know I am overweight, so could lose weight... Anything else?

I think you look very womanly...if I had one tip it would be to tone down the eye make up slightly. Eyeliner on the inside of the bottom inner eye can look very harsh. Really believe less is often more! Check out Charlotte Tilbury make up tutorials...her natural looks are stunning!

Play around with makeup. Like the above poster, I think your eye look is a little harsh on you. An off white liner can be used to frame the eyes if you want that look, dark all the way around is hard to pull off particularly if you're fair. Don't be afraid, particularly if you're rocking pale hair as well, to use brown, navy, or plum/ aubergine liner on your eyes, which also read less harsh.

Maybe experiment with blush shape as well, and lip colour?

I can err fair/ pale as well, and something I like to do is to take a neutral eyeshadow in something like a mid brown, and put a thin line just under my lower lashes to my iris, then smudge it out a bit. It gives my eyes definition without overpowering them. Something to experiment with, again.

I don't know about locally to you, but in Manchester the ladies (and sometimes gents) at makeup counters wouldn't bat an eye helping you out finding things that suit you. Some might show you how to apply as well (obviously the more work they put in, the more they'll expect you to buy something. Some brands have lessons where the fee is redeemable on product).

Your hair in that first pic is also very natural looking

It just takes a lot of practice.

I can recommend revolution brand eyeshadows in superdrug.

In terms of brands, I rarely go wrong with Nyx. Elf have some good stuff (and I like their brushes), although they're a bit hit and miss. Maybelline rarely steers me wrong (and if you want a darkish line on your lower waterline, if you can get their Unstoppable eyeliner, get it in Espresso and apply the tiniest amount. It, and the darker Onyx, can get over the top if you overdo it, but it's buildable rather than immediately intense, so it's not as harsh).

Experiment with a softer hairstyle. A soft wave rather than curls which could defeat the object and a lighter brown with a bit of feathering around the face. Your fringe looks great I like that look.

I don't know how you like to dress but I think that too many frills, too much lace and satin can have the opposite to the desired effect.

Pencil or even thin smudged eyeshadow is much more forgiving than liquid eyeliner. I don't bother with liquid, it always look like a hot mess when I do it.

Top eyeliner make up: practice the winged eye flick that suits your eye shape.

Lower eyeliner: try Brown instead of black. It's softer and can build the intensity better. Try to only put lower eye liner on the outer eye corner to the middle of your lower eye line. It will keep your eyes "open"

Lips: men tend to have thinner lips, so lip liner and gloss used correctly can make the illusion of poutier lips. Emphasis cupids bow and blend lip liner inwards and keep gloss at the centre of lips to make lips look more supple.

Lashes: flirty, mysterious, etc. They cab emphasis the doe eyes look or make you look sultry depending on which false lashes you use.

Contour: drag queens use it to sculpt and shape their face. Lots of videos on that.

5'o clock shadow: shave, shave, shave.

A classic piece of fashion advice is, before leaving the house, remove one accessory. I'm not criticising by saying this, but generally less is more. So, big earrings or necklace. Frilly top and plain bottom. One item that's patterned. Etc.

I think you look lovely. The dark hair really suits you but a wee curl softening the hard lines would maybe help.

All good make up tips above so nothing to add really except bright eyes OR lips not both. Neutral shades don't have to be boring and help emphasise the "bright" feature. Good luck x

There must be a class/seminar for this somewhere in the UK?

Alternatively our daughter spends hours on YouTube looking at make up tutorials.

Cannot recommend YouTube enough for make up tutorials..

Maybe invest in a good eyeshadow pallete- I have a few by urban decay, the naked basics palettes are amazing for easy to wear looks! They also do some great felt tip liquid eyeliner that's so easy to use to do a sexy little flick at the end..

I like your wigs it's not easy to get a good one.

Losing weight won’t make you more feminine. If anything, the weight will soften your body and face and actually make you more feminine.

You have a fairly gender neutral face shape so that’s a great start.

You can create a good cleavage by using a ‘sticky bra’. Buy them on eBay, amazon etc. You stick them to your chest. Pop on a under sized padded bra over it and then unstick one side as you drag your skin toward the centre. Stick it down and then repeat from the other side.

Effectively you have pulled the skin into a cleavage and the padded bra gives you the boobs.

You can only ever been yourself.

Everone else is taken.

It's at what point do you conclude you are the best "me" you can ever be.

OP, I'm not the biggest makeup person, so I'll comment on the hair.

The most recent piccy shows off your skin tone nicely. Don't go ash blonde. It's too harsh for you, it shows up all the contrast and create far more harsh shadows on your face. The cheekbones will look harsher and more angular and any hint of 5 O'Clock shadow will be magnified. Go for brunette or even a red wigs. The red refection will make your skin tone sing.

Another thing I will say if you can afford it, shop for a wig that doesn't look plastic. Yes natural can be more expensive, but if you are artistic, creative, and can work with your hands you can make your own. You can easily choose synthetic fibres that look more natural. There are too many YT videos to recommend.

I watch tons of utube vids I too have trouble with eyeliner and I will never attempt a wing look ..but I said that about false eyelashes but now can put them on I love trying different eyeshadows and lipsticks ..I do appreciate how hard it is I now always check out girls make up

This is what I’ve found with TV friends. In an effort to look more feminine, they go a bit to far . Whether it’s with dress , or makeup. Less is more. Watch what cis women wear day to day . I really like the wig & colour in your profile pic. I’d stay in those tones, but maybe a bit longer on the sides with an inward feather effect , to help soften your jawline.

Keep practicing with the makeup. Apply then tone it down by half . You’ll get it . Don’t forget most of us have been practicing since we were 12 lol Our eyes were originally overdone too

I’m so much better from when I started out as I used to slap the makeup on thick, now I barely use much for my ‘base’ and it helps me be passable (apart from voice wise)

Me also. I have been doing my makeup since I was 10. I used to look like Ronald McDonald. It was messy.

Now it's subtle and blended.

As for clothes ,if I'm out shopping it's jumpers and jeans .

Hair is lush in first pic, maybe bring it into your jawline a bit with the aid of straighteners? Softens the jawline and also neutral eye colours to accent your natural eye colour. Yes, totally agree with the comments on the eyeliner. Have a look on YouTube for some great tutorials to play with to find a look that really suits you. And a little tip for lips... White liner on the cupids bow, ever so slightly above the lip line and then use a liner before lipstick, it gives you less spider in, a cleaner finish and makes your lips look plumper x

We all evolve over time and hopefully improve. Makeup is so complicated with so many different looks. I love YouTube as it's far easier to watch someone and see how it's done.

Thanks again to everyone who took time to reply to my post. Really appreciated. I am sort bit out of depth at the minute but this time next year I might not be a millionaire but hopefully I will look a bit more presentable. Like some wise Chinese proverb said a journey if 1000 miles starts with a few steps... Maybe I might meet a nice lady who likes tv's. I will leave that to another post..

Losing weight won’t make you more feminine. If anything, the weight will soften your body and face and actually make you more feminine.

You have a fairly gender neutral face shape so that’s a great start.

Effectively you have pulled the skin into a cleavage and the padded bra gives you the boobs.

Just in case anyone hasn’t realised; I’m trans. I had a Homer Simpson shadow 18 months ago. Orange lipstick, translucent setting powder and then a full cover foundation set with a powder my skin tone was my go to. Laser at a Nuffield hospital for 12 months sorted that.

Hormones are fixing some of my other faults.

I have a list of facial surgical needs that I’m saving for.

Hiya Moira, I've been following your thread with interest. Firstly - whenever someone says shitty things like that, just tell them to go fuck themselves. Secondly - you look great on your profile pic!

Some great tips on here about makeup and dress style. My contribution would be that a lot of passing in public is just down to having confidence in being who you are. You have already proved yourself to be pretty amazing the very first time you showed yourself to other people, the rest now is just down to determination and practice
