Having the worst time since getting it a month ago. Contemplating removing it but not sure whether to persevere a bit longer. Really messing with our sex life and fun times. Decisions decisions.

Anyone else have any issues with it and they've settled or is my body telling me to get it out???

I’ve had mine for over 3 years now, was a little erratic for the first few months lots of random periods that could be painful. But it settled and now I very rarely have a period and normally only very light, sometimes nearly unnoticeable and they last a couple of days at most.

I have heard some horrible stories and think they can be very different for each person, I would give it a little more time but always trust your body, if it doesn’t feel right it probably isn’t

My friends had a few problems with hers . Alot of bleeding and major stomach cramps after having it in for nearly 8 weeks . Ended up at the doctors after being sick , headaches and feeling ill thinking she just had a bug and turns out she had sepsis so please if you are having any other symptoms other than bleeding get checked to be safe .

They are different for different people , I'd love one but I struggle with certain pills so don't want to take the risk. Xx

I had 1 previously with no difficulties after it had ‘settled’ in, other than some weight gain and terrible spots on my face.

I had one last year and it was awful. Bled for the first 6 months, and then experienced horrendous bleeding that caused me to have a week off work and I had to sit/lie on a bath towel as it was that bad.

Went to get it removed and after 2 scans and an abdominal and chest X-ray they discovered it had expelled itself - they think it had been pulled out with the awful bleeding.

I now won’t have one again. It’s a real shame as the first one was excellent.

There is loads of info online about women’s experiences with it, and a couple of Facebook groups it’s worth joining to get a measured view.

It's different for everyone. Lots of people get on with it. Unfortunately I wasn't one of those.

I stuck with mine for 3 months, although they recommend 6.

I bled heavily and had terrible pain. I gave in and had it removed for my own well being.

Speak to your gp and see what they say.

Apparently they get paid if you have one fitted and keep it for at least 6 months? Not sure but if that's the case, it's not being used in the best interests of the patient.

I had one for 6 weeks and it was the worst time of my life,never stopped bleeding and the hormones in it caused me to become severely depressed and it took me around 12 months to stabise everything once it was removed.

I just have a simple copper coil now and never had any issues and it give that extra peace of mind in case of condom splits etc.

I've had mine for about two years. I get a period at random every three to six months, and they're heavy and sometimes painful. But I'm down from an inevitably heavy period every three weeks to two months, so although painful periods are new, I think it's wonderful. But my standards for success here are unfortunately low.

I got on ok with mine till the nurse found it hanging out of my cervix at a smear appointment

I am now on the injection which has suited me much better and stopped the awful monthly periods that I still had with the coil. The coil definitely doesn't suit everyone and if you feel unhappy with it OP there are other options to try x

I've had mine since January and not had any issues. I find that I usually have a period about every 6-8 weeks and that they last 2 weeks which makes potential meets think I'm avoiding meeting (I don't meet new people when bleeding). It's finding what works best for you. The injection was a nightmare for me and after my third one I bled constantly for 12 weeks and had to take tablets to stop it. But if something doesn't feel right then maybe try something else? Listen to your body would be my advice. Good luck xx

I'm on my third one, and have had a few little settling in problems with them, such as bleeding cramps acne and backache but it has settled down each time and I have got along with them fine for years afterwards. I did ask for one to be taken out and they told me to bear with it and I did and it was fine in the end. It is different for everybody so you have to do whatever you feel is best.

go and discuss it with nurse/dr at contraceptive clinic. They will discuss all the other options/ additional pills and or a different coil

Can take a few months to settle. I "persevered" for a year and then had the blasted thing removed. If it works it's brilliant, and it does work for most, but it caused me non stop pain, bleeding more often than not and constantly getting UTIs.

Now on the mini pill and it's brilliant!!! Haven't had a period since I got it x

I’ve just had the jaydess coil fitted as I didn’t want the hormone levels that I had with mirena before and it seems to be settling in well. The jaydess has less hormones. That might be an option for people struggling as I only found out that this existed recently. I had only heard of the mirena and the copper coil til then.

mmmm! I thought there were only 2! I just got my mirena taken out because of the hormones gp said there is a tiny amount but i felt sluggish and not myself! So i will see about one u mentioned x

Don't go to your gp- go to your local contraception clinic. Gps are not specialist, clinics do this day in day out so will know the best option for you. DO NOT suffer you can have some pills along side while the coil settles

My gp is excellent he’s gyny trained. He has told me it can take 3 months for your body to adjust and for it to settle. If it hasn’t then be back in and get checked. He did tell me that if it’s not inserted right it will cause a lot of pain. A lot of gps aren’t actually able to do it! I’m on my second one now and the only issues where the first 3 months. If it continues go see tour gp, you shouldn’t be in a lot of pain at all. Hope you feel ok soon x

I'm not really in any pain. Its more of the constant spotting, bloating & mood swings. I don't feel like myself but I know if I take it out it'll he another while until things go back to normal so may as well give it another month or 2. Hubby misses the old me but he's a good old stick and being patient with me xx

Depends on the problem but basically with the mirena coil it can take a while to settle. Clinics often advise to take a contraceptive pill along side to help with symptoms for a few months

I'd try to hang on a little longer. I struggled for 6 weeks with my first one- cramps and bleeding- but happily on my third now and barely noticed anything since. No periods since made up for it!

I had one fitted but it didn't sit me. I had irregular bleeding, weight gain and other side effects. I perservered for 10 months before insisting it was removed.

Took mine a few months to settle but since then no periods and no baby risk. Due to hypertension I cant use the pill. I certainly don't miss horrendously heavy periods.

However, I do now have some cervical scaring which I put down to the coil. Occasionally this can make me spot a little after sex.

I'm due to have mine changed and I'm a bit scared. Unsure if I'll have another few months of settling in to contend with or any pain having it removed.

In general though, it's been a positive experience.

There's a lot of horror stories online but that's often because other experiences seem less noteworthy!

I think 3 months will be my cut off point. If I'm not happy with it by then I'll get it out but I will make an appointment in the meantime after some advice sent privately. Apparently Norethisterone can be given to help you through the initial period x

Only issue I've had is 1 slipped and had to be removed and replaced with another.

Different contraception works for different people.

I don't have periods (at all!) , no pain and no chance of of having any more kids

I ended up in hospital for 4 days on intravenous antibiotics because of mine.

Had nothing but issues from the day it was put in. Have changed to the depro injection and not had any issues, or monthly's, since.

Mine has been fine & im on my 3rd with no issue - but I have friends who had bad experiences with them & had to have them removed

You should be due to have your follow up checks (usually 4-6 weeks after) so I’d get booked in ASAP & discuss with them - they should be able to remove it if that’s what you decide between you

I've had a light-medium bleed on and off since 22 May, and I'm getting a bit frustrated now, thought it had settled but it hasn't. I just want to have sex with my bf!

I have been using this for the last 20 years. I haven't had a period for the last 11 or 12 years had a few issues to start but it soon settled down. One more change and I don't have to have it done ever again it can just stay in there x

Some people take a while to adjust. I’d still get yourself booked in ASAP for your follow up appointment, because that should be done between 4-6 weeks after, which will hopefully put your mind at rest; but if you’re starting to get there then that sounds positive! Good luck! x

It can happen, it doesn’t guarantee no bleeding, some people get light bleeds. I did with my second for a few months but nothing with this one other than the first week or so.

Go & get it checked if you’re not happy with it x

I had it on and off for 15 years. Never any issues with it.

Took just over a year to stop bleeding though. After that it was fantastic. I would and do recommend it to any female.

Op stick with it. You've hardly given it a chance.

You can! Tell him to wear a condom. If he's squeamish, tell him to close his eyes as he withdraws from you. Then you can clean if up (if needed) with baby wipes.

Yeah I ended up with regular periods on my first one during the last couple of years and that's fine, you can plan around it. I had my smear in March and the coil was checked then, it was fine. It's been the past couple of months it's been unsettled. I know it can take up to a year to settle though

On my 4th. Each one has been different.

My last one was poorly positioned, perhaps yours is? Discuss with your GP. I must add that it can take longer than a month to settle though.

I gave it 2 months and now the little fecker is out my body can breathe a sigh of relief. I knew it wasnt for me from the start and gave it a good shot but there really hasn't been any positives for me at all. Bloating, weight gain, very low sex drive, low mood. I feel better already and it's only been 24 hours.

Last time I went to the well women's clinic the Dr told me about the new coil, she said it has had good results but because the hormones are so minimal that they did not know if it would stop bleeds but I would be interested in having this when my coil needs changing.
