Depends. If the message is understandable, it's fine. If not, it gets deleted.

In a perfect world, everyone would write properly and posters having a pop at other people's spelling mistakes wouldn't make any themselves. But we don't have it that good, do we?

A little lazy in the forums when it comes to correct spelling, grammar etc.

But in a mail to someone we would use Word to ensure its easy to follow and no spelling issues and then send it.

A lot of people use their mobiles these days so are likely to be using them and its easier to "txt spk" - but no excuse really.

It's just lazy- either that or some horrible attempt to look "cool" or "kewl" as some might say. There is no need for text speak, and although yes, as some try to argue, "language must develop", it should move forward not regress. I think it gives the impression that the person is either lazy or chavvy, neither of which I find particularly attractive.

i try to text and check spelling as my blackberry as the spell checker on.

but occasionally i will use some words like U instead of You and a few other abbreviations as it can be quicker.

if i need to text and its coming to 2 messages and i can get it all in one i will abbreviate

Not so much the messages that can irritate but the profiles full of bad spelling and then asking for no text speak messages when quite clearly that's what they have used on their own profiles.

Quite clearly it must be a wind up or am I missing something ?

Text speak drives me nuts. I can find someone interesting, send them a message, but if the response comes back in text, it really puts me off. Everyone can easily make a spelling mistake, so not normally an issue, unless the message is riddled with them.

Very good! After a brief exchange of messages where I ended up sounding like my former english teacher (stop mumbling boy and speak clearly!) I eventually found out that it meant-what (have) you been up to? I didn't realise it was a question at first thanks to lack of any punctuation but don't get me started on that topic!!!

here's a suggestion - next time you get a txt spk message - reply to it in txt spk (google for a txt spk translator if you arent practiced) but insert completely meaningless txt speak words as a wind up.

so something like this:

Hi john, tnx 4 yr luvly msg, we'd realy lk 2 fgtmnigxprs w/u sumtym.

I got a lovely long message once, full of weird spellings and strange words, took time to work it out and realised the guy was dyslexic, went on to meet up and it was worth it, what he lacked in writing capability he more than made up for with personality and humour.....but if I receive a message in text speak it's always a no thank you.

"I can't understand what they say, and lifes too short.

Totally agree! And it's not just an "old fuddy duddy" thing either, even young people struggle too. And its made worse by the fact that there are different ways to abbreviate, which can cause a lot of confusion.

Fundamentally it's inefficient as a form of communication, it's much harder to read because your brain has extra processing to do, which also slows you down, but it creates extra work trying to decipher the message that most people, old and young, give up if messages are not short sound bites. It's totally unsuited for long meaningful conversation, and because our brains are wired in the way they are it often fails to properly convey the intended message.

Sadly a lot of this is biology. As one gets older there is a tendency to be more expressive and ti desire greater clarity in communication, so whenever an adult chooses to converse using text speech it will always appear puerile or lazy.

Having 2 daughters, I've sort of got used to some of the text. Sometimes I do have to phone them and ask what they are trying to saying. I do abbreviate some words if on phone as im not very quick with texting and dont like predictive text on phones. So no if I understand it it doesnt bother me, same as spelling mistakes dont bother me either.

I don't write messages, threads, or text using any text speak, I can't understand it, can't write it, most definitely can't stand it. Having said that, if people use it, that's up to them and go for it. Just don't expect a sensible reply if I can't translate

With the advent of predictive text, contracts and payt bundles that give you unlimited texts and phones that will stitch multiple messages together, txt speak has become a little bit five years ago.

So another possible reply might be "txt spk?? Oh that's just sooo 2006!"

I agree that txt speak is not great. I do use tbh and lol a lot.

One question I have seen etc used a lot on profiles...including my own. I would suggest that that is an ld form of txt speak.

What I am annoyed about is the comments regarding spelling and grammar.

I struggle to spell and my grammar is not great but I have pitched to CFO and CEOs. I have produced multi million pound refinances. I mange a member of staff and do their reviews.

For me grammar and spelling is not a turnoff...rudeness and general snobbery is

I really don't have a problem with bad spelling and grammar. As long as the writer is making the effort to communicate I won't lose any sleep over the grammar and spelling, but communication is the key.

Most of us will make errors and there will be any number of reasons why these happen, but anyone who uses text speak, especially on such a site, is clearly indicating they can't even be bothered to try and communicate, or care what impact they're making inthe recipient.

As mentioned above there no longer is any real need for text speak. It is an unfortunate legacy that refuses to go away. However it is puerile, it is lazy, and it is totally inconsiderate.

Reply privatelyReply in forumReply +quote

I hate it. It shows a lack of thought and effort. I don't even use it when I text. I punctuate and use capital letters and paragraphs. Yes, I am odd, but it was how I was educated. And I think that is also the key. I wish to meet like minded and like educated people. The use of text speak/messages by a person would indicate incompatibility.

Yes, I use 'lol' because it conveys a tone in a post or message that could otherwise be taken the wrong way, i.e. it is a lighthearted exclamation which denotes humour.

Spelling and grammar I'm not AS fussy about, but I hate it when people don't use contractions correctly or confuse ''they're, there and their'' and ''your & you're'' among other words. It doesn't take a huge effort to spell check a message and when first impressions count, I would say it was worth the extra minute of one's time.

Call me a snob, Lol!!!!!!!
