They're 'OK', but the further away you move from an actual office-based screening the higher the margin for error. A trip to a GUM clinic is always best - it's faster, cheaper and more accurate.

These test kits are available in many areas for free through your health authority- here in Derbyshire it’s SH24 who are the service provider. Leicestershire have a similar service. The kits go back to Health Authority certified and regulated labs through the post ..... private kits go who knows where....

It’s easy, quick and discrete. The only problem I have is getting blood to flow for the sample - I have to lance fingers sometimes three times to get enough

Definitely not faster!! I’ve waited at least 6 weeks for results before

You can get them free on the umbrella website.

I always do mine at home cause it's usually hours sitting in the clinic other wise.

They're pretty easy to do but the blood test is a bit of a ball ache, I usually get one my colleagues to take my blood the conventional way and fill the container like that

My local GUM clinic had a policy of "no news is good news" last time I went. i.e., if you don't hear from us you're fine. I didn't like that at all.

Wigan shine centre (gum clinic ) is brilliant. 7 day turnaround on all including urine swabs and hiv. Either a text saying no further appointment needed or a date and time for attendance. They also suggest and provide hep b immunisation and checks but takes longer obviously. Skilled and lovely staff too.

Farnborough.

Just tried through SH24 and came up that not available in my area so try Fettle where you have to cover costs. So although its a NHS its not free to everyone. Gum clinic when im next due it is then.

They provide home tests you can do yourself I think, or will send a nurse to your house to administer same as your clinic would do, can’t get much easier than that!

Nurse we had came from our local Nuffield health hospital so they seem to just be a broker for whatever private clinic is near you. You do miss out on the tea and biscuits if they come you your house though!

Our local clinic now sends kits rather than let you walk in and wait . All this talk about using your clinic rather than online must be for private tests , as we have found the new postal service is absolutely fine . Saves petrol , waiting , and just as good

We don't have it in our area. It's only for chlamydia testing in the under 25s, which is a shame as walk in is very busy, but appointments can be made.

The kits are good but they can cause you to have false positives. Personally I would go to the gum clinic as you can discuss things properly and if needed have a thorough examination- as well as getting free condoms

Appreciate it’s for under 24’s but they don’t ask for a year of birth so mine come free via first class post.

Would prefer the local clinic but it’s such a pain trying to get an appointment without having to wait all day.

Good luck OP and everyone getting tested. You know it makes sense.

Thinking it's a bit like a home pregnancy test or the doc telling you there's a bun in your oven

I'm just using it as a curiosity thing and a why not it's easy and convinient thing and a in between going to the clinic thing .

After all if you get a positive you'll be going to the clinic anyway ...

Dosent sound like it's a full test either ..

Just so you youngsters know they used to push a long thin thing down the inside of a man's cock and the far end would open up like an umbrella and it would be used to scrape the vd from inside the cock. I am told it was very very painful. Always play safe like us guys

Umbrella is the name of the sexual health service in Birmingham.

And even when playing safe you should get tested, thought that would be common sense.

I'm surprised at that. Mine says 2-3 weeks but in reality if it is bad news they will contact you urgently. Luckily I have always had to wait the 2-3 weeks for them to contact me!

"I was concidering buying it online. Ive heard different opinions. Have you tried one in the past? If yes, where did you get it from?

I was in the clinic in Exeter last year. As always seem to end up having some long chat about failing nhs service etc.

Had difficulty getting an appointment..so was explaining to the Dr the poor system in place in devon.

Anyway she went on to explain that the service for whole of devon was up for contract. We sat talking for sometime. She went on to explain about the eroded nhs services in Devon and that sexual health was up for tender.

I asked how much. She said costs nhs 6.6 million per year to provide services for sexual health in devon, clinics etc.

I said how many companies applied? She said just one. Richard Branson and shit medical company. How much I asked. Same as nhs 6.6 million.

She went on to explain that under Bransons plans the would be no clinics no more in Devon and all tests would be kits posted out and posted back, with possibility of future web camera dr if needed.

She said she felt these kits not good, chances of mixed results, chances of not getting tested completely to save on lab costs.

She then said she felt sorry for people in little towns like exmouth, as said is some 300+ sexually active people with hiv there, that they see and care for.

I was like sorry 300+ people in a town like exmouth with hiv that have sex. What are the figures for here in Exeter? Someone knocked the door then and we got interrupted. She had to go.

Said she enjoyed our chat, and could I write to an mp and express my concern about whole service going to be replaced by a kit.

"And the postal ones don't offer throat swabs."

I always add a message at the bottom of sh24 form asking for a throat swab. The text to say they will send one in a separate envelope and always do.

Results are usually back within a week with texts beforehand to say they've received the swabs from me.

Brilliant free service.
