Ive had the implant for about 3 years now and at first my periods were pretty normal then after a couple of months they stopped altogether and i didnt have one for atleast a year maybe longer, then they started again and were just normal periods lasting just under a week once a month, but over the past couple of months they've been a nightmare id have a normal one then after a few days id have another one again sometimes lasting a few days or even a full week again and its just happened again recently...grrrrr

Now i know implants can mess your periods up and vary from person to person but i dont know what to do because its starting to annoy me and im having to cancel meets yet again because of it being so unpredictable but the reason i chose the implant was because of how convienient it is ive already tried the pill and have heard alot of negative things about the coil. Just unsure as to what to do whether to ride it out and see if it changes or what, its just so frustrating! Anyone had any similar experiences or any advice?

Shaz has the implant in the arm but has to have it changed every 2 years instead of 3 as her periods go crazy, sometimes a few month at a time with only a week break between.

Explain it to your doctor and he might get a new one fitted for you.

No idea how many typs there is, Shaz has her's put in her arm, it's about the size of a hairgrip and can feel it just under the skin.

Works though

The doc told us it's common for periods to go a tad wonky at the end of the implants life, Just tell doctor and he will sort you out

Don't let him palm you of with the period suppressant pills though as although they do work the period comes back with vengeance

yes i have the implant too....for the first six months i had a period every month as usual lasting a week, but very light...the last couple of months have started to get more erratic, one lasted 2 weeks, another month i had a period for a week then stopped, but after a few days i started again for another week...very frustrating....and only got it fitted in march.....hoping it settles down again soon.

I have an implant injected into my stomach every 28 days. It's been fine for the four months I've had it, no periods, until Friday...for a couple of hours. Nothing over the weekend, then this morning, had the implant, stopped again.

I've been sterilised 20 years use it to stop my periods.

Thats the trouble everyones different so whilst the injection contraceptive has stopped some womens periods it hasnt worked for others, so its hard deciding whether to try another type or not. As someone mentioned earlier is it true towards the end when your implant is soon due to be changed it can make your periods more irregular, i could understand why as the hormones it releases have got to be close to running out the closer you get to the end of the 3 years.

The implant needs changing every 3 years as it's efficacy runs out. So maybe yours needs changing and your periods coming back means it's no longer supressing your ovulation (which is how it works) and you need a new one. NB. you could get preggers never mind anything else!

It hasnt got to the 3 years yet, ive got the date written down on a special card they gave me when i had it done, im not that silly to risk it! Im a few months off the date, in the original post i was getting it mixed up and thinking id had it longer than i thought but ive checked now, just a few months to go til its changed, so if it is the case i think ill just ride it out for teh few months til i get a new one.

I'm on my second implant, had it changed this year after having it for three years.

They do not expect you to wait for the full three years though...mine was replace 2 months early, and the doctor said to me that they can last longer than the three years in some cases up to 7 but the profession did not want to advertise that fact.

I was lucky if I had a 'slight' period every six months, but as soon as I had it replaced I had a period that lasted 2 or 3 days quite soon after which I was warned might happen, haven't had a period now since March, so yes it does all depend on the person I suppose.

I'd arrange to have yours replaced now and see if the makes a difference. x

little house on the praire

I dont know anything about the inplant but you said you had had it for three years. Has it come to the end of its time. I know if i dont have my coil changed exactly 5 years the bleeding starts again.

Go t your doctor they will advice you.

As for the coil, the merina coil is what i have and i never have periods or even know its there and has to be changed once every 5 years.

If you do a search for threads i dont know what the titles of the threads where but i know there have been threads on the coil and implant

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Thanks for this post. My daughter has the implant and her periods have gone crazy, so its good to see its not just her.

For the record, she is halfway through her second. No problems at all with the first so don't know why its all gone wrong now, but its good to know she's not dying or anything.

Not a problem! Well i put it on here as none of my friends have they implant there all on the pill which ive already experienced and realised wasnt for me lol so wanted to know myself i wasnt the only person with a messed up cycle, its just annoying more than anything with how random it is and theres no warning whatsoever.

There was me like 5 or 6 months ago thinking id be one of lucky ones whos never gonna have a period again whilst on the implant haha

There was a report recently on implants being wrongly placed, leading to pregnancy...whilst it sounds as if yours is just reaching the end of its life i would see a doc, just in case.

Coil wearer here and couldnt recommend it more.

it could be your age

my daughter, who is your age, had a 5 year implant put in and she was ok to start, then her periods went all over the place, she would be on for a couple of weeks at a time, off for a week then back on again

She went back to the family planning and had it taken out, they told her it was due to her age as the implant does not suit a lot of young girls as at 18 your bodies not settled down properly yet

so why they put them in is beyond me

it may be worth going back and ask

she went on the depo injection, which is an injection in your bum every 11 weeks and had no problems at all

Ive been on depo for about 10 years and never had a proper period in that time, i get a bit of spotting a couple of days before my nerxt injections due and thats it

its always suited me and suits my daughter much better than the implant

Viv has had a Mirena coil for the last two years or so, works a treat, no side effects at all, just the odd period but only every three or four months, she would recommend it!

Thanks for the advice, i think ill go to the doctors then and see what they say about it and then maybe look into trying a different type of contraception depending on the outcome.

I have the implant. But also had break through bleeds. They gave me the pill to take as well.

It works. I now go 6-8 weeks without a period. I only take my pill every 3 days.. and I've not had any issues.

i have the most horrific 10/12 days long periods....got the mirena coil 2 and a half years ago, and like the person above....no side effects have odd bleed which usually coincides with me being mega stressed......only thing with mine is that depending on time of the month/position and power of thrust...the wires can catch his bits and hurt him.....id just say "serves ya right for trying to batter me cervix" haha mirena works with hormones locally so doesn't flood your body with hormones.....the implant does flood your body....ae friend of mine was bleeding non stop for weeks....hormones up the wall, mood swings, crying all the while....tell yer wanted to slap her....she got it out and replaced it.....right as rain! I am on my 2nd Implant.

The 1st one was fantastic and I had no periods until towards the end of the 3 years.

They changed the brand of Implant last year and I had the newer version this time. I have put on loads of weight and get regular spotting.

The worst thing is I cannot feel the implant and the Nurse tells me it has embedded itself deep into my muscle so i have to go to the hospital tomorrow for an X-ray to locate it

This is a great thread. I am due to go to the FPC tomorrow as my only protection at the moment is condoms. I had a coil called a Gynefix, which I lost somehow

I was thinking about having another coil, but I suffer quite badly from PMT the week before so have been advised to have the Depo injection, but not having a period is kinda freaky lol

depo effects everyone different, some women still have normal periods, some have none, i usually just get a bit of spotting for a couple of days before my next injetions due, then soon as i have the injection it stops

i would recomend it to anyone because it suits me

but then it dont suit everyone but then nothing does

I've had the implants. The first one was infact 6 rods around the size of hair grips which they spread out in your arm like a fan. I had that for 5 yrs and it was brilliant. I very rarely had a period with this.

When they removed that it had changed to the Implanon which was only 1 rod that lasted 3 yrs. This didn't agree with me and I had to have it taken out due to really bad moods.

It certainly doesnt suit anyone for me it turned me into a psychotic bitch( okay more of one)

I have had no mood swings with the implant... and I take it along side a pill that I take to regulate my bleeding (just your normal pill but I dont take it daily)

No, I had to have an ultrasound and an xray to see if it had shifted, but nothing was there lol

I went to the clinic yesterday to discuss what's best and they said the coil again as the injection has a risk of weightgain. I have lost 4 stone thus year and don't want it back lol x

I loved the Depo injection but got told after 3 years the risk of osteoporosis increased so changed to implant.

First implant no periods, second only got in last 12 months, also had to have an ultrasound to find it and I went over by weeks without realising. Now on third so will see how this goes but very happy with it.

Anything is better than the pill as I could never remember to take it
