Ok, firstly I know I should go with the flow... but here goes anyway.

I sent a message, it got read. Yay. Then it changed back to unread... what can I glean from this?!? (If anything).

What it says. Someone read it then marked it as unread.

There...

I do this if I don’t have time to respond or want to think more carefully about a response. It signals interest from me but don’t take that as gospel for every unread message!

The only possible inference is that someone read it then marked it unread. If you start wondering what it means you'll drive yourself crazy.

I do this. It means I will reply later when I have more time.

I also mark as unread usually to reply later, as leaving it read and unreplied seems rude.

We're the same in that one of us will read it and then mark it as unread until the other can take a look. Then we mark it back as unread until we have the time to reply properly.

Messages that we're not going to reply to will be left as 'read' or deleted.

I mark as unread so guys don’t get all over excited that I’ve actually read their message and bombard me with more asking why I’ve not relied.

We usually do thus if we want to reply, but don't have time at that particular moment, so basically use it as a reminder system.

Not got time to answer right away or wait until partner has chance to read before replying rather than opening and forgetting to reply and being thought rude
