Do any of you get completely turned off by terrible grammar and spelling in profile text?

If so, how many mistakes, or how bad do they need to be before you stop reading and decide the person isn't for you?

I see a lot of profiles stating they can't abide bad spelling and I wouldn't usually care, but most computers and smart phones will help you out with spelling at the very least now and I still see some atrociously bad profiles on here.

I'm not taking the occasional mistype here either. I'm talking the stuff that implies the writer genuinely has trouble writing.

Nope because some people have learning disabilities and dyslexia. People shouldnt judge on peoples spellings and grammar ourselfs have dyslexia and have major problems with spellings an grammar but no where on this site is it a rule nore is it a rule in swinging thats our 2 cents on the matter

It's usually obvious if it's dyslexia as opposed to poor use of language. Using 'are' instead of 'our' or 'off/ov' instead of 'of' strangely sets my teeth on edge more than a wall of misspelled text with no punctuation.

We're not exactly English phd's but we find it says a lot about a person when they don't take the time to craft a proper message, especially when they're trying to build a rapport. We'll happily chat online with anyone but it can get hard to keep it flowing when you have the buzzer from Operation going off in your head every time you hit an error

I can cope with lack of grammar and a certain amount of spelling mistakes providing they are genuine. When I read things that have been shortened due to laziness I switch off - things like 'u', '2' and 'ov' are not mistakes. If they can't be bothered writing you instead of u then I find it an automatic turn off.

Dyslexia is very different to people who cannot be bothered to check their grammar and spelling. I find it difficult understanding poor grammar and spelling, the wrong grammar can alter the meaning of a sentence completely.

On the whole, yes. Sometimes we've hit 'Post Message' and then noticed a letter missing etc.. but we've noticed some dreadful spellings.

"Your" and "You're" are our pet hate when they're mixed up.

To, too, their, they're and there do your head in when people get those wrong as well.

The funny thing is, they get upset at those that pull them up on poor spelling/grammar. If they got it right, they wouldn't get pulled up.

Also, people using 'Dyslexia' as an excuse just means they're too lazy to use a spell checker.

One or two spelling mistakes I may accept if they are hard words to spell.

Dyslexia is usually easy to spot.

I am a real punctuation Nazi though. If the first letter of a profile is in lower case, I've seen enough already.

well we genuinely are and this is the issue people just assume your lazy an not bothered which is not true. I myself find those words very hard too put down or too write in messages i get confused 8 times out of 10 people just say your lazy an your grammar is awful

No I don't because we are all of different intelligence levels, we aren't all in Mensa. I think it's extremely bad manners to keep bringing it up too. There is one lovely Fab forum user who is dyslexic, your comment is a trifle insulting .

I have autocorrect and predictive text switched off on my phone, as it keeps changing stuff. In particular it changes I to U, completely changing what I want to say.

No, as long as I can understand what that person is trying to say. It's of no consequence to me if it's misspelled.

When an heggspert comes out with an official study linking poor spelling to crap sex, then I might take notice. I suspect that may take some time to appear though. Somewhere between pigs learning to fly, and Hell freezing.

Having Dyslexia myself I completely understand the difficulties. I sympathise with people who are dyslexic and the challenges that they are faced with.

I understand that dyslexia comes in different shapes and sizes for everyone.

I try not to judge people on something they are born with and can not change.

I am not particularly turned off by poor grammar, bad spelling or dodgy writing skills. We all have different skills after all.

However I am seriously TURNED ON by reading a profile that is well written, interesting to read and well put together.

...and if I receive a beautifully written message and the spelling and grammar are good then I am pretty much theirs!

I think any decent human being empathises with anyone who has to deal with dsylexia, so that would never be a negative for me.

That said I do find a well written profile appealing, especially if it comes across as playful and fun.

A turn off would be a profile that comes across as up themselves, chavvy or riddled with text speak.

I think spelling and grammar are important.. However as long as someone has obviously made an effort to write more than half a sentence in a message and is obviously struggling with with the written word despite phones etc doing quite a lot of the work for them..

Essentially it's a site for people to meet to have sex, just because they aren't that succinct with the written word doesn't mean they are unable to hold an interesting conversation or indeed are not intelligent..

I have plenty of friends who can't write or spell well but they are damn fine friends and a spell checker is only as good as the person spelling... If you don't know it's spelt incorrectly because you can't spell your no further forward...

Text speak and poor grammar are real bug bears of mine, along with poor punctuation.

An occasional misspelling is one thing, but in the same way that your photos should sell how you look your profile text and messages should sell your mind.

We tend to be more sexually attracted to people who take pride in themselves, and that includes what they write. Whenever I rewrite our profile I probably read it over a good 10 times and get Mr to double check for grammar. It's important how we present ourselves to others. Realise we're a bit extreme, but given that we are extreme, we're less likely to click with someone who doesn't give a toss how their profile reads. It's just about compatibility really.

I am dyslexic and I despise nothing more than text speak, I won't read anything where it's used. I just do not understand a word of it, I did dreadfully at school leaving with an E in English, diagnosed at 28 and gained and A. I have trigger words I will never learn to spell and I Hate having to use easier words because spell checker has no idea what I'm trying to say.

There's no excuse for laziness, you can't make a first impression twice. If you want to meet people then act like it, that's my opinion. The sentences with zero punctuation, seriously wtf is wrong with you? Could at least just bung a few in and hope for the best lol.

The dyslexia is usually obvious and can't be helped. However, mostly they couldn't be bothered to string a half decent sentence (or aren't capable of doing so). Either way not a good thing. Yes I can have sex with someone with no higher brain function but I find intellect sexy

To be fair I think we all have our 'triggers' and alarm bells - and we're all different as human beings - so have to judge on gut instinct prior to any potential meets. We would subscribe to your way of thinking generally to be honest, but would also accept we may well miss out on getting to know some amazing folks. No good or bad, right or wrong, but suspect our own box ticks ensure as much as possible that there's a good chance of being compatible with those we get that instinctive and intuitive feeling about.

Agree with this, although we're not extreme - and are aware of dyslexia etc. we do tend to 'switch on' to a well-written and thoughtful profile, especially one with classy photos, as opposed to more 'graphic' ones. Taking the trouble to try to reflect who you are in writing and pictures goes a long way to attract the kind of people you'd like to get to know.

Nice to see some people in here don't agree with this. I'm dyslexic and yes I had to Google how to spell it. My grammar is poor yes phones spell check. But they don't always help. My poor spelling and grammar has no reflection on me what's so ever. I'm a nice down to earth guy. I'm polite friendly well mannered respect people from all ages shapes sizes backgrounds. One thing life has taught me. Is never judge a book by it's cover. Some people may look down at you and judge. Those people I have no time what's so ever for. There judgement is just as bad as my spelling.

People are usually looking for someone they find attractive and who they are compatible with. I think any reason for that attraction to be missing is fair enough. I don't understand why people get slagged off for finding things unattractive. It's the same as saying people should shag anyone and everyone.

Doesn't matter if you're lazy with grammar and spelling or you're dyslexic, we find it very off putting when we consider selecting people to contact or if they messaged first, should we reply.

Some people don't give two hoots.

But our advice is, you want to appeal to the majority of members. If poor grammar and spelling deters people, your target audience is less. It's as simple as that.

As a dyslexic, no i dont, and spell checkers can sometimes make it harder, word that i cant relate as a picture in my head for example. Where, were ware, there third are all the sane to me, also i may write a word twice, but if i read it i only see the one word.

If I was dyslexic, I think I'd pop a little note on my profile. Obviously no one has to disclose that information, but I know on a personal level, I've read some profiles and have been put off by spelling and punctuation errors.

Spelling and grammar mistakes are one of the many ways people can come across completely differently, from when you meet them in person compared to how they come across in their profiles.

If I has a choice I would pic the person who can string a conversation together rather than one who can put punctuation in a sentence.

It's obvious if someone has dyslexia, they usually say so anyway. Yes it's a massive turn off, adults should be able to spell common words and be able to know the difference between common homophones such as 'there/their'.

If they can't manage to construct sentences using correct common spellings and use grammar they aren't a person I'd be interested in meeting. I enjoy a good conversation too, men need to stimulate my mind too. There's no excuse with phones that have spell checks and internet you can amazingly while it's in your hand go look up a word. No one is perfect, we all make typos or when we're rushing mis spell words but when profiles are littered with bad spelling and grammar it's a no for me. Don't get me started on greengrocers' disease ...stray apostrophes! It's just not a difficult concept and to be fair if you can't remember the rules of apostrophes and pluralisation go look it up, loads of websites that explain it. You have your phone or whatever in your hand anyway! I used to teach so I'm a tad pedantic about spelling and grammar. I can spot dyslexia etc.

Absolutely agree OP. A well written profile shows they take a bit of pride in how they appear, and a well written message shows a bit of respect for the recipient. There are only words and photos here to sift people by, so if you can't be arsed with either then you won't have much luck.

On anything else, like my profile or something important, I take way more time, re read it, correct errors etc.

Have to admit it does bug me when I see poorly worded profiles, I can spot the difference between someone who has an issue, and just sheer laziness

I'm sure I'll be corrected by someone, and I admit I'm not an expert. But from dyslexics I knew and school, and dyslexics that I work with, I've been given the impression that they get a bit muddled with letters hence require a bit more time before getting it right. I was always led to believe that dyslexics get given more time in exams, but they are still capable of undertaking that exam to the same standard as long as they are given that extra time. I'm sure there are some who suffer more extreme levels of dyslexia, but for the most I would have thought are capable (if they wanted to) of writing a Fab profile and taking that extra time reading over it a few times to check for accuracy. Dyslexia can excuse some things, but it can't excuse a 'can't be arsed' attitude.

Not so bothered about the spelling and grammar although we feel both are important. What matters far more to us is the content and tone of messages. Sadly we get plenty of lazy and frankly rude one liners like 'great tits', 'luv to fuck you', 'what you lookin for?', 'm or f?'... Whether in mailbox messages or chat PM's there's rarely so much as a polite 'hello' first. It's baffling why so many guys seem to think that this technique is going to yield positive results.

Just because we're here on a swinging site doesn't mean we don't treat people with respect and expect the same in return.

Utter nonsense. I know people who work seven days a week and own their businesses and are most definitely not lazy. Your assumptions of them being lazy is way of the mark just because they cannot spell or read and write properly.

People who work 7 days a week are obviously not lazy. However as pointed out before on this thread it is lazy not to get a decent profile written. It is very obvious to us when no effort is being made either in the profile or in the message sent. That has nothing to do with being dyslexic.

But all the dyslexics who have posted here are perfectly understandable. It's the people who just can't be arsed to reread their messages to make sure they are intelligible that I object to. That does come across as laziness and a lack of respect, and implies similar values would apply in a meet.

Thank you, I could not have put it better. I'm really dyslexic and writing is not my thing. I try my best with grammar, but I know sometimes it makes me look like an idiot.

I'd doesn't help knowing there are people judging others by there grammar and spelling, but saying that they probably are not the kinda people I want to meet

I myself when faced with writing a message struggle

on here you want to come across as chatty and when spelling and grammar are correct it's natural to feel that it makes you stand out in a positive way.

However I have genuine problems and reasons that mean writing anything is terrifying and a struggle and therefore leave it to the mr to be the writer .

In person I'm the opposite, I can hold my own in conversation , I've been told I'm eloquent and chatty.

I'd prefer people to judge me by who I am in the real then by the spelling of the message or profile comments

It makes me quite sad that some go by someone's ability to spell or use grammar

It's taken me a while to write this message and the mistakes in this message aren't lazy, my brain just doesn't see them .

People need to remember that everyone has something they struggle with

For myself and many others it's writing and spelling , doesn't make us less interesting to know
