You can only openly talk about something by openly talking. There is no other way. Start small and build up the habit of talking frankly. If she's reluctant or shy it might be difficult though and you will either need to be patient or accept that talking openly is not possible with her.

As for plucking up the courage sometimes its easier to start in the throes of passion or away from home.

Yes you should .

Totally agree with most of the comments.
