Speculum

I went for my usual sexual health screening today and oh my goodness I find the speculum so painful. I always have done. Even when they are super gentle I have to breath through the pain. I try to relax as I know being tense makes it worse but wow it feels like a very sore bruise is being stretched and pushed. Just me?

They don't usually use a speculum for a routine sexual health screen?

Usually it's self taken swabs. Just making sure people aren't scared off going

Absolutely. I've never had a speculum used for any STI testing, as the person quoted said, that is for cervical smear tests.

I assumed that's what she was there for. X

I had one used on me today for a gynae appointment and only felt a slight tug as it was removed. It's never been painful for me.

I think it must depend on the trust you're under. My trust moved over to doing your own swabs in the past couple of years.

I have, but usually they take a swab without one. I've never done a self swab, and they don't do throat swabs because of false positive results.

They can use it to check your cervix as well as taking swabs.

Speculum's come in different sizes. Ask for a smaller one next time.

Have you mentioned it to them?

It may just be that they are using the wrong size.

Ask them to use a smaller speculum

I don't have a deep cervix so they have to use a smaller one on me

Thanks everyone, I just assumed they only used one size but will definitely ask next time and hopefully will be a lot more comfortable!

Last time I had one was when they checked to see if my cervix was ok to have the coil fitted ( because I've had 3 c-sections) anyway, she's making it bigger and bigger, all of a sudden I feel the most excruciating pain and we realise she has one of my labia flaps caught in the plastic screw!!! Was like my worse nightmare.

In the end I just braved it and quickly tugged it off. Now have a half moon shape chunk out of it.

No photos to prove unfortunately.

Never went back for the coil. Absolutely scared for life!

Try putting your hands under the bottom of your spine next time, this will tilt your cervix upwards. Do tell them it hurts you. X

I had a smear and test (whilst she was down there!) last week and barely felt a thing. Not sure if she was super skilled or if that says something about me!

If it hurts inserting the speculum, you can always ask if you can insert it yourself, they'll just open it when you're ready!! A proper speculum exam ensures a thorough examination, not just for STI's, but the general health of the vaginal canal. This is common practice if you experience Post Coital Bleeding!

I can find it painful, and I've had one used at a sexual health screening. I try to deep breathe when the doctor is removing, fi find this helps.
