Photos are a problem if you want anonimity.

If you put a photo on here that ALSO appears on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc then a Google search will throw that up and you can be identified.

I checked out one guy and his LinkedIn profile came up so i replied to his message with his full name. He was shocked, then after explanation thanked me and rapidly took down the photo. Be cautious folks!

I had someone contact me through Facebook, having been linked with my phone number. I really didn't want any contact with this person after the business dealings we had, and yet she contacted me.

I ended up removing the Facebook app from my phone, using a third party app instead. I also took my number off my Facebook account.

Tracing people via electronic contacts is surprisingly easy. A friend had some problems with a phone number recently and, within an hour, I had a name, address, professional body membership, a car for sale and how much this person paid for a fish tank!

Never link your phone number to Facebook it's not secure. Plus with phones these days all apps share information it is so easy to find personal information out over the internet. Same with your address be careful where you put your address. But that said as long as your full address isn't on Facebook on here or any other networking/ social site then people shouldn't be able to find Actual house just the area you live in

I have multiple friends on here and also on the face thing. That's because we are friends and have chosen to do this. Never noticed any "cross over" problems with fandoms tho.....think it depends on your general security settings across the board.

The thread is entitled threats?

Has someone made threats or tried to make you feel that your safety is at risk?

If so you need to report that profile to the admin along with clear evidence and also depending on what may have happened inform police.

You should not feel threatened and anyone making you feel this way should be removed from the community and have his actions questions by the appropriate authoritys.

Which bit are you thinking is creepy, messaging with their name? I ask because I did a Google search once because I thought the pic was of a sports person. Turned out it probably was of the Fabber but had been used in the local press and the article had their name and where they worked etc. I thought it would be kind to drop him a line and let him know but G thought it would be creepy. What's the forum consensus?

I don't think it's too late.

There is a reverse image search in google. It will scour the net for the image elsewhere.

Additionally, there is a russian site that is launching a facial lookup engine that will literally act as a white pages for people. Facebook have some very dubious privacy and data use criteria so they can use us as a commodity for data and advertising, so whilst meany people think that not having a pic on here means that you have something to hide....its increasingly credible that keeping elements away from work mates, future employers, even banks and credit reference agencies is becoming increasingly blurred.

I work in an industry where I myself am seeing some scary big brother style uses of peoples data that you don't really see publicity on, in time there will be more coming up on this.

OP he is a total weirdo! I don't get why people do this but I've had it. I was chatting to a guy who after a bit said he could trace me if I was using my mobile to access Fab. I reported him to admin and he disappeared but I'm very wary now of anyone who takes a huge interest in where I live.

I got traced to my Facebook account on another site. All I had for my profile name was Hev and no distinguishing/face pictures, they pm me No idea who they were. Have been traced several times by men I,'ve been chatting to as well. XXX

I guess it's both, creepy that you can find that sort of info from a single picture and creepy to be sent your name&address. Throwing a stranger's personal details at them without context is one sure way to make one paranoid; the explanation should come first, if you don't want to offend. But I think all in all it's good to let people know as many are surprisingly unaware.

If I like someone I will send a message like "did you know that the picture you sent me gives RIS results that reveal your full name/address/occupation/pictures of your family? If privacy is important to you do not use pictures that appear elsewhere". If don't like someone I don't bother alerting them (though on one occasion yes I replied using their name just to spook them... sorry, only human!)

Not surprised because I have been on here long enough to know all of this goes on!

This is meant to be fun and a pleasurable experience for everyone. Nobody should feel threatened or face extreme problems.

People trying to trace you, cyber bullies in forums, people with personal insecurities forming groups and lashing out at individuals etc etc

We can only hope admin are doing all they can and take safety for all users very seriously. Not just for single women because single men really do suffer at times.

OP, don't put on pics that are on other sites especially FB. Don't give out your mobile, even more so if it is on FB too.

Keep fab stuff unique to fab, and nothing linked back to your everyday life.

Ps your status gives unnecessary personal family info, things like that are best avoided too.

Agree. I mentioned my daughter once, years ago, and got an inbox full of creepy messages wanting a MFF with me and her. There are some really weird people on here, and the less info we give them to play with, the better.

He offered money for a meet, he did not include any pics with that message. He had forgotten he'd sent me about 18 pics a few weeks prior. I didn't feel obligated to be too courteous with his sensitive info.

You don't have a server so he must have been talking about your IP Address and unless he owns the Fab website and has the functionality activated, he won't know what your IP Address is.

Even if he gets a hold of your IP Address through Fab, he will also need to work for your broadband provider to find out which home addresses were assigned that IP Address, because usually there are quite a few. If you were browsing on your mobile, your IP Address changes many many times depending on your location.

So basically, he's talking rubbish.

That being said, he sounds like a nutter, so the advise to report him to the site admin and the police is a good one.

I pointed out to the guy a Google image search showed up his name and place of work on LinkedIn.

He was grateful for the info and removed the problem pic. The alternative was to say nothing and leave someone less honest to abuse the info.

And to add to that even if he works for your ISP or mobile company he won't necessarily have access to any IP logging info. I work for an ISP and get to see a fair bit of security stuff due to my role. However even i cannot just go in and trace IP addresses. Only limited people can and they provide the information only when there is a request from above for the info. The person is trying to scare you.

If you folk really have to give out mobile numbers, how and a cheap PAYG SIM and phone?
