it normally means the download isn't complete or the file is corrupted

when downloading a file you normally get the choice to Run/Open or save to disk..... so try the Run option if you've not done that already

also, only download microsoft stuff from the microsoft site itself (normally download.microsoft.com) as there are too many cyber scumbags out there...

Its also a sign that your computer is infected already

There are some very good clone security packages that look like the real thing but really are credit card scams do be careful.

If you have an AV package, make sure it is genuine and run the scan. Also run a Malware scanner.

This has happened to me in the past it was quite simple to fix myself.

Im assuming your comp is a few years old and possibly running on an earlier version of windows.

Put in your error message into a search. That brought up explanations on how to fix it. I just had to go to a site and download the relevant bit of prog that was missing.

If my memory serves me well and it was a few years ago it was from windows update.

Wasn't difficult.

As you have the full version of Avast as do I, i also have spybot which is a free and useful malware programme that id recommend getting.

http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

this is one both of my laptops and is a top free malware programme & it runs gr8 with avast.

Windows Live Messenger should be downloaded from Microsofts site directly.

Also depending on what version of windows you are running limits what version you can install. The latest version is Vista/Win 7 only. Version 2009 is the last one for XP, and to be honest I stick with that one as they've really shafted the newer version to be more crap!

Aye but our IT Department don't have a clue about things either sometimes and their usual advice is "turn it off and then back on again!"

If you're trying to run a program that is not designed for your version of Windows you may get this error.

As others have said, go directly to the Microsoft site, check downloads section. uninstall the old version - an reinstall the new 1

Just got an image of a porn parody of IT crowd. I won't take my job seriously.

WARNING TECHNICAL

Is the installer for a 32 bit machine? If the file name has x64 then it isn't. x86 is fine or no numbers at all is fine. Uninstalling an older version is ok. Sometimes newer programs do not support older versions of windows but I doubt msn or live messenger would
