So 6 weeks ago I had a marina coil fitted.

Today I went to have the threads checked but she couldn't find them! She couldn't find the entire thing!!

So now I have to go for an x-ray for them to locate it

Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm guessing my fanny has maybe eaten it or a fellow faster has banged it so far up there that's it's never to be seen again!

They can slip up in to your uterus. If and I stress if, it has they will be able to retrieve it.

You might not have. It might have gone the other way or still be in place just tucked away a bit.

That happened to mine about a month after having it fitted. I had an scan and it showed it was in correct place but the strings had gone up into the cervix. I've had it nearly 4 years now and just have to have a scan once a year. Hopefully it's still there xx

When you ovulate the lining of your uterus gets thicker this can draw the coil higher up so the cords can't be felt, especially if they were cut very short when inserted.usually easier to check for them at the beginning or end of your cycle. They are usually easy to spot on scan but do occasionally fall out. This is personal experience ?? a big relief to see coil on scan not a baby as I recall. X

Mine was exactly the same. I had to have an ultrasound to make sure it was still there. It was. It was fine for the 5 years I had it. It was tricky on removal and my gp couldn't do it. I had to go to the GUM clinic and they managed to remove it.

Yes it is. I wasn't clear, the strings can slip up, they're what they normally use to retrieve it and I always assumed the fact that they sit in your cervix kept it in place.

I had mine removed after 3 months because of bleeding like that and constant pain. Apparently it was okay, according to my doctor!! I still say it wasn't fitted right. My then partner could feel it and sex was bloody and uncomfortable.

The Mirena coil is different to a normal coil as it has a hormone (proegesterone) embedded it in which slowly leeches out and therefore as well as providing contraception like an ordinary coil it can help reduce heavy periods unlike ordinary coils . If the Doctor can't see or feel the strings which are attached to it and are usually used to pull it out of the womb at the end of its natural life (about 5 years) then you don't know whether it's still in the womb or has fallen out . Yes a scan every year will show it's there but what if it falls out between scans ? You wouldn't know that had happened and could get pregnant although this must be very rare otherwise they wouldn't be giving one to anybody for contraception !

I think you'd have to be pretty out of it to not realise it fell out. It's not that small.

I had one of these fitted after my son was born and had so much trouble with it, I got them to remove it. I was in Germany at the time and the GP removed it. He put me in a chair with stirrups and used what looked like a corkscrew to remove it. Not the most pleasant of experiences. Glad to have been rid of it as was my ex, as the cut ends of the strings would jab into the end of his cock during sex.

Just make sure you don't rely on coil as only birth control. I had a regular coil fitted years ago and only had it in three months and fell pregnant !!! Apparently it moved.

Similar happened to me. The previous doctor trimmed the threads too short. They couldn't easily take it out to be replaced with a new one so I had to go to hospital, knocked out and had it removed that way.

Despite the above I'd definitely recommend this coil. No periods, can have sex whenever I like and I can forget about it and still not get pregnant. Never had any side effects nor problems and this current one is my third.

Read up on adenomyosis. I have it and they said the mirena coil will sort it. I'm sceptical having been told initially I'd need a hysterectomy

I bled for three weeks with large clots. I'm on Norethisterone to stop the bleeding until the coils fitted

Why is contraception so difficult for women? I've had an awful experience of the implant over the last three year, nothing really debilitating but annoying and painful all the same, and the only thing that has stopped me getting it removed is that I feel like I just have to chose another evil to put inside me!

Two aunties and my sister all got pregnant on the pill (my family is prone to reflux so it's probably got something to do with the vomiting), implant has caused low mood and almost constant periods, and my mother and a close friend became prone to serious womb infections and BV when they got the coil in. Now I know it's different for everyone, but these are extremely worrying stories, especially when your doctors already dismiss anything to do with your reproductive health as you 'being too small because you've never had kids' and that you just 'need stretching out by pregnancy'.

I had just about convinced myself to give the coil ago, so other than the strings going missing or them moving out of place, what side effects have people experienced?

Mine fell out unnoticed. I wasn't 'out of it', the nurse said it happens. I think it must have been during a heavy bleed, which I'm prone to, and for which I wanted the coil in the first place!

I struggled for years to find contraception that was effective without too many side effects and also to reduce the heavy periods which laid me out with a severe migraine the day before starting my period and with "Niagara falls" for a couple of days at the beginning of it. I used to look like a corpse when it was really bad. That coupled with vicious stomach cramps, I was almost glad when I hit menopause. The best/ most effective solution to the above was breast feeding my kids. I tried the mirina coil with no success and various pills, next to breast feeding, the depo jab was effective in reducing periods to zero and preventing pregnancy. I think that everyone is different, one solution for one woman may not suit the next. Male GPs are often dismissive of the enormity of the problem and how much suffering and disruption to our lives that heavy periods can cause. The best thing to do is fine a sympathetic GP and also be persistent, if it's not working, whatever it is, go back until a solution is found. We aren't in the middle ages and no, one size does not fit all!

"

Everyone is different & there are more positives then negatives associated with it overall.

However, mine never felt right from the offset, I wonder if it was inserted correctly because the pain I experienced over a few days was like labour. It definitely moved but that was dismissed (I would sometimes bleed during / after sex and they couldn't attribute anything to it) even though I felt a low pain afterwards, I think certain sexual positions shifted it.

Went the time came to remove it, I was told it has moved and shouldn't be in the position it was ~ the removal was hideous even though I should be relatively pain free.

Looking back i should have been more insistent that something wasn't right but then it's also quite difficult when this was my 1st experience of one, nothing to gauge it against.

I refused another one, took the mini pill for a while & now haven't taken anything for the last 6 months. Feel so much better tbh.

Hope I haven't put you off, I suppose what I'm trying to say is stick to your convictions if you think something isn't right.

Good luck!

"

I had just about convinced myself to give the coil ago, so other than the strings going missing or them moving out of place, what side effects have people experienced?"

I had my first Mirena at 47. My gp tested me for various infections including sexually transmitted and once they came back clear put it in for me. It was mildly unpleasant, she stopped while I had a mild contraction but otherwise it was ok. I went back to get the strings cut shorter because Mr N could feel them. You should check the strings monthly but I could never find the damn things so I used to ask the nurse or doctor to check every now and again. The only side effects I experienced were lack of periods, freedom from concerns about getting pregnant and Mr N said I felt slightly different up near my cervix. Removal was pain free and over in seconds.

I recommend them because my experience was a good one. I think the only way to make your mind up is by taking to your gp or practice nurse and weighing it up for yourself.

The replacement came out during sex.

Tried another replacement but had a few problems keeping them in due to fibroids.

Best thing I had was a TCRE at 40 no more periods since result.

A problem I had was the strings used to break condoms

Hope your problems gets sorted x

I've had 3 inserted. 1st 1 I managed to remove by bearing down and wiping at the same time! Bled like I've never bled b4. Other 2 if had in for ages. Sometimes threads curl into cervix but come back out. They need to know it's in the right place as odd 1 has been known to go up into the uterus. I check fairly regularly. If I can't find them I leave it a few days b4 I check again
