Herpes usually flares when your immune system is low and can be brought on by stress too. Some people may only have one flair up in a lifetime, some people 2 or 3 or some people have them frequently. Theres no cure apart from try and strengthen your immune system with plenty of sleep relaxation and good diet etc. Good luck OP i can imagine its not pleasant.

"technically cold sores are herpes, and unfortunately can be passed to genitals. Once you have them, that's it, although they can be controlled. It's a little known fact that the majority of the population carry the herpes virus, but not as many actually show symptoms. If you are between outbreaks you are not infectious, but it is entirely up to you whether you let people know. A regular partner might need more information than a one off." It also depends on which type it is. If you get type 1 (typically oral herpes) on your genitals then you're less likely to ever get a recurrence. If its type 2 (typically genital herpes) then recurrences are more likely and you can actually shed the virus even when you're not showing symptoms. You can also shed with type 1 but it's less likely. Anybody with cold sores, it's likely to be type 1, as type 2 very rarely appears on the mouth, and is less likely than type 1 on the genitals of recurring. If you have one type of herpes, you're unlikely to get the other. And it's highly unlikely that you'll get the same type on both parts of the body.

"Take the amino acid l-lysine which is very effective in helping prevent herpes flare-ups or reducing their severity. Avoid supplements containing arginine (very common in body-building supplements) which can trigger outbreaks. Avoid sex during an outbreak. Follow a healthy diet and manage your stress levels and you will minimise the risk of outbreaks." Totally recommend I-lysine. I get cold sores when stressed so take this and haven't had one since. It also helped when I had shingles.

You have to be showing symptoms though.. basically the sores have to be sore and weepy.. if you're not showing symptoms, there's no test. People freak when they hear the word herpes... but chicken pox is a form of herpes and almost everyone has had that. It never leaves your body.

I didn't know that, I assumed oral was easily transmitted to genital and vice versa " It's easy to get hsv-1 on your genitals through oral sex. It's difficult to get hsv-2 on your mouth because the gland that holds the virus near the mouth doesn't like type 2. It prefers type 1. Similarly, the gland holding the virus near your genitals prefers type 2, but it will take type 1 if type 2 hasn't been introduced to it. There's then no space in that gland for the other type. Type 2 is the 'dirty' one because it's typically caught through sex.. type 1 is more accepted because old aunt Mabel probably gave it to you when you were a kid.
