I still use a bit of it from when it was just a gamer/chatroom thing, but generally dislike it when it is the whole bloody sentence There is no need for it if you haven't got to be typing quickly to stay in the conversation, so why do it?

What do you classify as text talk? I would say both my texts and messages on here are sloppy... i dont use proper grammar ... over punctuate everything and frequently use lol or haha as endings to sentences (to show something as being lighthearted usually ... it can be hard to get tone across in messages)

I would say this is text talk but thats exactly what i am doing ... talking to someone through text / message ... i am not writing an essay to be graded or a cv to apply for a job ... if someone thinks that makes me lazy on a meet and would avoid me because of it then i dont think its the kind of person i want to be meeting anyway

Reply privatelyReply in forumReply +quote

I classify textspeak as that weird non-language with vowels cut out. I would also include abbreviations like "lol" but not "ha ha" as that term existed pre-mobile phone.

Im dyslexic so I really struggle reading text talk, over the years I've trained my brain to recognised words when they're spelt correctly, so Ines that aren't or are text talk can be hard for me to decipher. I really have to take my time when I type to make sure it's right and I have more trouble when I'm tired or ill so my brains to at full function. I have learnt what certain ones mean but every so often I get thrown a curveball. Was only last week I learnt AFK means away from keyboard

Loathe it completely. Would never expect it from mature adults - especially when we're looking to gain the interest of others on here. It's a bit of a no-brainer to just reject - although we may on occasion miss out on someone great, but our gut instinct is that we're unlikely to be compatible socially.

Can't stand it! When spelling 3-letter and 4-letter correctly is too much effort in a one line message... it's too much effort for me to reply. I either think the person really can't be asked or isn't well educated. And all the spelling mistakes, when there's spell check? Just don't understand it?

It's an utterly depressing bastardisation of the written form. I disapprove of it with a great amount of sadness.

Call me old fashioned, but there's a far greater reward in the effort of formulaic prose.

I think I prefer poor spelling to text speak. As far as I'm concerned, poor spelling can't really be helped in some cases, and I think that someone being judged negatively for trying to spell isn't really right. Text talk, however, is a choice. You're choosing to cut corners and therefore being lazy with your words. Obviously things like "brb", "atm" or "tbh" are just standards in this culture but sometimes it's genuinely just as quick to add an extra "h" into "what", isn't it? Unfortunately it's the way things are going?

We don't like text talk... Personally I don't even like it in texts. It was a necessity in the 80's/90's when there was a 128/160 character limit. Now though, you have no excuse for not using proper spelling, grammar and punctuation.

I work in a school, and it saddens me to see that the kids often use "txt" talk in all of their written/typed work... including assignments and EXAMS.

We agree with the general consensus that it's definitely off-putting.

I'd tend to delete such messages, whereas the male half does toy around with profiles who are inclined to send such messages.

I mean we're in an era of using smartphones or internet browsers that have spellcheckers included, is it really so difficult to attempt typing properly?

Doesn't bother me in the slightest, being able to write and spell isn't necessarily a sign of intelligence or being a nice person.

Language changes over time and use , I constantly use I'm, they're , doesn't etc , like the vast majority of the population, where as less than a hundered years ago, I'd have been given the same scorn some on here have shown to the use of text speak.
