Running a daytime social

Wrexham

We're looking for advice on running a daytime social in our local area.

We're guessing you essentially just pick a place and let people know when to turn up? Should you book a private room at the back of a pub to keep things guest-list-only? Should bar-staff be informed?

Any advice/help would be gratefully received.

a friend of mine ran one in Rhyl last year, I think she said she asked the manager if she could reserve an area where people could meet..

obviously not telling them what for specifically..

that was just set aside within the pub..

if its going to be in Wrexham, I'm guessing you need to clear a spot away from the all day drinkers

Cheers Kinky, sounds straightforward enough.

As you say, the biggest issue is finding a pub in Wrexham with somewhere to sit!

I'm guessing hiring a hall or something would make it feel a bit like a coffee morning.

oh definitely..

no, a pub is the way to go...

that way people can have a drink and relax themselves a bit..

i just made a topic in the meets section with the date and time i was turning up, but not the location and i ask the location is kept private. this is so not just anyone will turn up as i do ban some people from attending if i feel they might cause problems.

i mention that i will give out the location about 2 days before the event, this way it reminds those interested when the social is, and i get a couple of days before the social to chat a little to anyone who is nervous or just excited about going and to chill and look forward to the event myself.

you will get chancers asking for the location after this time and without being on the guestlist, the first time i was generous and sent out the location and none of them turned up anyway. later events i ignored any late comers, i'm stict about this.

i'm even more strict about asking people to post in the topic and not pm me, this way i can keep an eye on the guest list easily and others considering going to the social will see who else is going. it also means i will not forget to pm them the location and reminder. some use their hotlist for this but i find using the topic itself is easier and i'm less likely to make mistakes or forget anyone.

i specify in my status that i will not reply via pm to anyone and leave a link to the said topic there also. this is to stop anyone using my social as an excuse to get me to talk to them.

asking others to promote the event via their stauses is a good idea as well.

that's how i do it and by ignoring anyone who doesn't follow the rules makes it less stressful, although sometimes they complain about me ignoring them (and i ignore that too).

my rules are based on finding genuine people who know how to socialise and who are not going to cause problems by not being able to follow simple etiquette, it worked really well.

the location itself knew we were coming and set aside some tables for us. i think it's best to go on a quiet night personally so that the pub is more likely to be welcome of the business and have the room for you all and you can hear each other chatting.

I used to co-host a social meet once a month in a pub in Reading town centre over a Saturday lunchtime. We put up a meet flag a few days before and those who messaged were given the pub details. We used to get there early (around 11.30/12.00) and saved a space, and people popped in whilst they were out and about shopping. It was a very relaxed atmosphere, lots of chatting and a good laugh and no one else in the pub had a clue that they were in the midst of swingers Good Luck with it all and I hope you have fun x
