can't find that computer help topic.

my laptop keeps crashing and i need help with that. it's like everything starts flickering and it's just crashed. so a bit different from the usual crashes where everything just freezes but maybe only aesthetically?

i can sort it by turning laptop on and off again but it's happening fairly regular and i need to sort it properly.

it's only been within the past 24 hrs. so i did a system restore to 2 days ago, and that thing where the laptop itself looks for problems to fix (it found nothing). done a bit of googling also.

any more ideas? don't think it's my browser causing it but i'm using firefox if that helps.

When it crashes are you using the same app? Does it crash around the same time like 20 mins after starting up etc?

Do leave the laptop on most of the time or do you shut it down when you don't need it?

yeah i am. the time seems to be random. i did think my browser was causing it but i'm not so sure now as the whole laptop seems to 'flicker'.

i leave it on most of the time yes, except if i go out or go to bed.

Cognitive recalibration (hit it with something hard n heavy)

I can't testify to the usefulness of this tip and take no responsibility for damage

Ok what make and model is it?

Home usage laptops are not built to be used in the way you have been using yours.. I wouldn't be surprised if the laptop is overheating and that is why it's cutting out.. do you get a blue screen with white text before it reboots? Or does it just cut out and turn off?

HP pavilion. not really happy with it overall, esp as it came with win8.1.

it reboots as normal, no problem there. bit slow because win8 is slow anyway.

basically what happens is it crashes, but in a way i've never seen anything crash before. like the screen flickers, instead of being faded out and having the crash message at the top of the screen.

A new laptop might be best or you could see about changing the power supply?

yeah, think i'll spend the next couple of weeks having a look at them. might sell this one to someone who uses their laptop less than me. trying a fan with it now and it doesn't seem to have crashed since but i'll give it 24 hrs to show.

thanks very much for your help also.

You could uninstall the app so see if makes your laptop more stable.

Also try a different browser.

Also there will be a safe mode boot that you can do to see if this makes your laptop more stable. Google the button press on booting to get into safe mode.

Can here the fans screaming before it dies.

Do you have any othe devices plugged in like printers mouse? If so unplug them.

Buy a can of air and blast it out. It may just be full of fluff.

not long since i changed the hard drive and cleaned it out then. i think the other guy is right and it's because i leave my laptop on all the time.

might give it a go though, thanks. can't do any harm to give it another clean.

If you can locate it have a quick look in the event viewer. Look in system logs and if it's an overheat on the cpu it should flag up warnings.

My boys laptop used to have the same issue so we purchased a metal mesh plate it now sits on as a huge external heat sink. That helps.

Screen flicker and going off could also be dodgy power supply or battery. Is your battery ok or do you have to have it plugged in? Remove battery and check terminals etc

it's only happened once since i started using the fan underneath it, and this was when the battery was charging...but this could also contribute to overheating too.

i'll try and take more notice of what is going on over the next couple of days when it happens.

thanks for all your help people, appreciated.
