I've searched old posts for previous threads on this, but didn't find any---hopefully I'm not repeating old news and have put this up in the right place.

My doc has suggested that I be fit with the Mirena coil for medical reasons, I've found info online, but I'm wondering if anyone can give me any real life experience of how it has affected them mentally/emotionally? I have a history of depression and anxiety, and am concerned the coil would impact this negatively.

Any responses here or privately would be greatly appreciated.

Not the coil, but I do have the implant.

Any hormonal contraception can mess you up.

Mine is coming out as I have been very very unstable with it. Moods swings and anger issues, crying and having very worrying thoughts.

I have gained loads of weight even though the doctors say it doesn't make you gain weight... it does.

The only bonus was no periods but tbh the way I have been I would much rather that!

And everyone can react differently but good luck x

I had the injection, and also then later the implant, both gave me severe depression, ended coming off any form of hormone as it too badly affected my moods.

That said the merina coil is a much more localised form and is said to carry less side effects as it's not expected to go around your entire system.

About 6 weeks ago, I came of contraceptives (im single and play safe) and can I just say....it is the most stable six months Ive had.

In terms of depression/medication side of things too it has been soooo much better.

If you can, come off of anything and also, if you can pay privately for a blood test/consultation to find out exactly what level of contraceptive hormone is correct for you and then go for that.

Id been on the pill since 15 (so 22 years) and was researching side effects of mini pill. And then I realised...wtf!

Best decision I have made for years.

I had it for years. The very first time it was fitted I remember feeling a bit miserable for a couple of days with no reason to, then I figured it out that the only thing different was the Mirena.

Other than that, no problems with mood other than the normal ones all humans are supposed to have occasionally.

In terms of mood the mirena is probably the best option for hormonal contraception there is as the hormones are only locally released into the womb rather than all over the body such as with the pill or implant

I don't have a coil but am extremely sensitive to chemical changes. Due to complications I've just had my pill changed to the mini pill. When I tried this a good few years back within 2 wks I was pretty much suicidal. This time luckily I'm doing fine on it and in fact I'm rather perky. Only downside is I have absolutely no control over periods anymore which is a real pain when you have a planned meet that you've been waiting for for months

Good luck OP, whatever you decide. Any issues you can always have it removed straight away.

I had the mirena coil fitted at the beginning of march and on the whole it has been great.

I haven't noticed any difference in mood apart from being slightly less tolerent of fuckwits. To be honest that's probably a good thing because I've always been too nice and not wanted to upset or offend anyone.

It did take a long time to settle down and i had loads of spotting etc. The last 2 months have been great. No spotting and my periods are now very light and only last 3-4 days. Before having the coil i bled very heavily for over a week and was anaemic.

Hi I've had a Mirena since my daughter was born 11 years ago. No problems and actually find it really convenient for contraception and lessening the monthly flood.. I also have a history of depression and it has not made that worse. Good luck.

It's great to read reactions from real people, not just studies or sensationalized reports of side effects.

To those who didn't have a negative emotional response....do you struggle with depression or anxiety to begin with?

Mine is very well treated, and hopefully will stay that way, I'm just scared of another bout of it.

I've tried every method of contraception going. The mirena coil made me bleed constantly and I had it taken out in the end. The implant gave me terrible mood swings. Neither had a notable impact on my mental health, but I have a long history of anxiety/depression and am on a cocktail of drugs for it, so maybe my medication blocked it? I don't know. I'm waiting now to be sterilised, as no contraception seems to agree with me, and i'm sure I don't want any more kids.

I have the same coil which your doctor has recommended. I'm so glad I've got it. Never ever had any issues nor any problems with it. Took a couple of years for my periods to completely stop but even before they stopped, i only ever had light spotting. Lasts for 5 years too! Really is the best thing I've had done. Highly recommended it.

From a mans perspective. Buy condoms!!! The mrs has tried them all and had problems with them alllllll. Implant made her an emotional wreck, crying over nothing and basically being down in the dumps. Coil made her fanny smell that bad she could smell it through her clothes, cause was some imbalance in the bacteria, hence she lost all confidence and sexual deviance. Were back to condoms and life cudnt be more bliss... Comdoms r the way!!!

I have no history of problems but I am on my second Mirena coil and short of it taking few weeks to settle down, its been great.

I had some mild back pain and a little bit of acne and blood spotting for the first 8 weeks ish).

Really wasn't for me, to say I was hormonal was an understatement! I was on it as I suffer with heavy periods.

It ended up dislodging a bit, enough for me to think I was pulling out my tampon and it was actually the coil ????

Tbh, if I had my time back, I would get sterilised in my 30s. Every hormonal contraception had negative effects for me. Thankfully my partner has had a vasectomy, so birth control is no longer an issue (condoms with others obviously).

i had the coil fitted for about 1 month before i removed it myself. the cramps were unbearable for me every time i sat down. it takes 3 to 6 months to settle down. no way could i go that long. ive suffered with depression for 22 years now. cant say it affected me but ive tried other contraceptions and they didnt affect my depression either, just didnt suit me in other ways xx

I had the Mirena fitted for medical reasons and 3 days later I had them remove it. My mood changed for the worse literally within hours. Having suffered depression before and as an anxiety manager I knew it was the wrong thing for me. I felt better within a week of removal. That's just my experience. I know of others who found it a Godsend.

I have had the coil for over two years and I find it excellent. Tummy ache for the first couple of days and since then absolutely no side effects and no periods. I think it's brilliant. Only one man has ever mentioned feeling it with his fingers!

I had the mirena coil and hated the bloody thing, told the Dr if they didn't remove it I was prepared to do it myself!

I have never suffered from depression, I am usually very level in my moods, but while I had it and for about 6 months after removal my mood swings were impressive, as were the headaches, muscle aches and a general sense of feeling wrong in myself. I could go on and list physical symptoms but that wasn't what you asked for.

I've never had kids and i have the mirena coil.

It's a myth that you can't have it unless you have had kids because you are too tight.

When they fit it they use a small dilator to open your cervix slightly to insert it.

Even if you have had kids they sometimes need to do this.

Your own personal physiology has more bearing on whether you can have it.

To say the least i felt like i had lost my woman after we had our first child and she had the implant then coil. She didnt want to touch me at all. Oh and forgot the implant had basically dried her up, she was never horny or wet.. It got that bad that i signed up to momsnet, to post of my experience and to warn others.

After years of the Doctors saying I needed the Mirena coil and me refusing due to hearing so many bad stories, I finally gave in and had it for over 2 years (it came out because I had surgery) I actually had 3 of them in the space of a year for other medically problems and other than the first week of mood swings like PMS I felt great! The depressive mood only hit once I had it taken out!

Personally I say give it a go! I told my Doctor Id try it for 6 months and it actually gave me 2 very good years! Xx

Having tried many various forms of contraception and suffering from depression I was told to try the Mirena coil. I've had no kids and the Dr's inserted it in the surgery. Had period like cramps for rest of day, easily controlled with painkillers. Bleeding reduced to nothing, mood lightened as I knew I had to worry no more about remembering the pill or injection.

I had the 1st one for nearly 5 years with no problems, had to have cervical surgery and as it was within 6 months of renewal they agreed to replace whilst under general anaesthetic. Thew 2nd one didn't settle as well. Had spotting and bleeding and minor cramps. Best thing I did was getting sterilised, ablation of womb lining as well due to period problems, at age 44 and my mood has been lifted again. No periods, no cramps and no worries. Hope you make the right decision for yourself. xx

Had one put in for heavy periods. It stayed in a year then I begged the Dr to remove it.

I had almost constant bleeding for the whole year, deep depression which I had to take a cocktail of medication for.

It was removed and after a week, I felt like I was coming back to life. Antidepressants were reduced and stopped after only a couple of months.

It was the worst thing for me to have. And since removal, I feel like me again.

My experience has been the same. I am on my second coil and even though I have a long history of depression I don't believe the coil has had any effect in that regard. In fact I have come off of my antidepressants since I had the coil fitted.

Have had the coil in for over 2 years now and its veen great and i have no periods and on the odd occassion that i do it lasts about an hour and is so light its hardly noticable. I was on the pill before which i bled on all the time, same with the implant i had a 6 month period with no break so was a great contraception. The depo injection made me crazy and i mean i was nuts to much hormone all at once. So for me the coil is great x

C has had the Mirena coil for over ten years now (five years, first coil, second coil can stay in seven years due to her age).

She wanted this form of contraception as is unobtrusive and she was sold on the idea that her periods would stop which was perfect for her and swinging.

They didn't, they just became more unpredictable and more varied in bleed.

As for depression, well,I've not really noticed any difference there so maybe there she was lucky.

Apparently there are non hormone coils about now.

Best thing I ever did, currently on my third one as I've had one for the last 13 years. I have no periods, no moods swings and no symptoms at all related to the menstrual cycle. I strongly recommend one.

I've had the mirena coil for around 15yrs now. I got it because the pill throws my depression into overdrive. Not had any problems mood wise with the mirena.

It hurts like hell when it's fitted, not helped by the fact I haven't had kids. Not had much trouble once it settled down. I still get very light periods but without it I'd be dreadful. Overall I'm pleased with it.

Non hormonal coils have been around for decades, they are made from copper. They work by preventing a fertilised egg from implanting and also release small amounts of copper ions which is harmful to sperm.

The hormonal coil lasts for five years and reduces/stops periods.

The non hormonal coil lasts for 10 years but makes periods much heavier for a lot of women.

I'm on my second coil, both times I bled pretty much constantly for 3-4 months after they were fitted but then never had a period until my last one was removed, I've suffered with depression for years and was on medication before I had one fitted so couldn't comment on the moods xx

I have a copper coil as I hate hormone contraception (I don't suffer any MH issues but quite frankly I can be a complete nightmare on hormonal contraception) I'd totally recommend it if it's an option for you?

This is what my doctor told me. It's the only hormonal contraception they will give me due to dangers of blood clotting from other types. But it's also the only hormonal contraception that hasn't messed with my emotional state, the injection affected my terribly. As everyone has different stories all I can say is try it. If it's not for you its easily removed x

When C was getting her second coil fitted she was asked how she was enjoying not having periods.

When she replied that they never stopped she was told that she was one of the lucky ones.

I'm sorry to hear it was painful for you. It shouldn't. All you should feel is discomfort and the idea is to take painkillers half an hour before your appointment and you shouldn't feel a thing. If it was beyond uncomfortable to the point of being painful I would suggest that was due to the person inserting it rather than the coil itself.

This is not necessarily the case, a retroverted uterus can make it impossible to insert an IUD without sedation.

I have had this coil fitted twice now and not had any problems physically or mentally. I have suffered with depression in the past and also had postnatal depression. So in my situation I actually only had depression when I didn't have the coil.

It was agony and I love pain. Had pain killer and sorry about the spelling mysoprostal? It was easier with that. Had a good 4 now I think and it doesn't get easier.

I had to have mine removed in days and opted for the depo injection which was another new set of problems.

I can't take the normal pill because of meds I take for epilepsy reduces it's effect.

I'm having another gynae op tomorrow. I know they will suggest the Mirena as the answer to my prayers but I don't want a foreign body inside me - I want a hysterectomy which I was told I could have 10 yrs ago. I have a zero chance of getting one but am fed up of pumping my body full of hormones, painkillers & anti-depressants.

I'm on the depo injection after my periods became irregular, heavy and I had bad PMT for an extended time in the run up to a period. I think it's fantastic, no periods any more, no hormonal dips. It works for me anyway

I keep thinking about changing from the mini pill but reading some stories on here really put me off other contraceptive! I came off a few years back and lasted 2 months until the PMS and period pains convinced me it was a bad idea

I'm about half way through my 2nd coil and this one is for purely for selfish reasons (Mr has had the snip).

The only side effect I'd say I've had from it, it stopped periods, and that is why I now have it for selfish reasons lol.

My advice would be try it.

Give it 6 months and if you decide its really not for you, for whatever reason, then just simply get it removed x

I felt the same when they took my coil out!!! It had to come out while they did a little op. Had to wait ages to get it put back. Had 2 failed condoms in the same week plus all the pain and pms. Begged them to put the damn thing back lol

I have the mirena fitted and to be honest I love it. I suffer with depression occasionally but wouldn't say it's to do with the coil or that it's any worse having it fitted.

I had the marina. I suffered mild depression but the main effect I had was pain during sex. It bloody hurt! The doctors kept gobbing me off until I demanded they remove it. They did and I was pain free again!

It's hard to say because I had a life changing event happen whilst I had the coil fitted, so would have probably felt the same level of depression regardless.

All I can say is though since having it removed I feel an awful lot better both physically & mentally.

I've had mine for years. Never had any problems. I also have anxiety and the crap that goes with it but the mirena coil didn't make any difference. Good luck in whatever you choose xx

A friend of mine suffered with a lot of pain after sex. Her dr thought it may have been when she came but she had the same feeling if she didn't cum. She had the coil fitted and it's made no difference at all.

Hope you are ok with it if you choose to have it

I have a mirena and absolutely love it. It was painful having it fitted, and I definitely felt sorry for myself and a little bit weird for a fortnight or so, but so worth it for five years of no periods! I'm now on to my second which was loads quicker and easier to fit - different doctor so maybe that's why? I do still get pmsy, although it's harder to know that's what it is without any bleeding! The pill made me feel really low for about a year but I didn't think about any link until someone else described the same experience a few years later doh! I really would recommend trying it. My sister has it too and she did not get on at all with the implant. Every woman is different though. Good luck

My ex wife had one and was great for approximately 2 years. However, after that she started having severe mood swings once a month for about 5 days. I plotted it on a calendar and could see a clear pattern. They were far worse than the pmt I was used to. I was accused of all sorts by her and it led to us seeking marriage guidance. Throughout she refused to accept the coil was to blame but did eventually have it removed. Her moods then stabilised.

I know now that she had severe mental issues anyway and this may have made the problem worse.

I can't take the normal pill because of meds I take for epilepsy reduces it's effect.

The mirena and depo release the same hormone,dr tried to push me into having it....i refused but didnt realise until i went to the clinic to discuss alternatives...i had the depo when it first came out and went through hell...so glad i stuck out for what i wanted and not what drs favour,my body doesnt like extra hormones at all.x

Its great to know that birth control/side effect isnt just a womans responsibility.

Ive no kids so cant have coil ideally, and your feedback on that is really helpful too.... that imbalance is an abso killer!

The only downside of being off the pill is that im uber horney all the time. Er...did i say downside

Have you been told that makes a difference?

Ive got a coil & I've not got kids.

I'm 45 & not in a position to have kids due to health reasons!

I had two Mirena coils - first one was great, had it in for 5 years and no issues at all. Loved it.

Second one was AWFUL I had to have it taken out after 6 months - depression, complete lack of libido, weight gain and acne! I wonder if they had changed the manufacturing or hormone levels because it was a completely different experience.

I have been contraception free for years now & best decision I ever made - feel like myself again! But the downside is having to use condoms

I've not had kids, I'm on my 3rd Mirena, I have history of MH issues. Best form of contraception. Once it's in, which yes is uncomfortable but painkillers take that away. Few days of period like pain, then nothing for 5 years. Extremely light to no periods. Hasn't effected sex drive or MH at all.

Having suffered with depression for years and having been on the pill and had the injection in the past I'm now using the coil. Can say it's not affected my depression and most probably the best thing I did. I've gone through 4 pregnancies and suffered the loss of 3. My only issue with the coil is when it's fitted. It hurt like hell but I'm fine now and wouldn't look back

Hi, I suffer from anxiety attacks and am on meds for depression. I had the mirena coil fitted about...8-9 weeks ago and mentally don't feel any different. I am however still spotting/bleeding and do get the odd cramp now and again but nothing major! I've heard plenty of mixed views on the coil and used to have the copper coil. I have to admit the copper coil (so far) seems better to me as with that I didn't have 1 spot of blood. But speak to your doctor and family planning clinic to get all the advice you need. Hope this helps x

I refuse to have anything that will mess with my hormones (had all sorts in the past) so for me the copper coil was the only option. I haven't had any problems with it after 5 years and it last 10 years. Anything for a stress free life?

Been using mirena coils now 16yrs & have absolutely no problem with it. I do however still get my periods but altho they are a pain, I do prefer getting them every month just to confirm I'm not pregnant (there is a wee tiny percentage that u still can get pregnant esp if other factors like antibiotics etc interfere).
