Different candles have different burning temps and the higher the burning temp the more likely it is you will get burnt.

So Google soy candles and massage candles as these have a very low burning temp.

Also have a look at most BDSM stores or online sex shops as these will have low burning temp candles safe for wax play.

Remember to have something to hand to remove the wax as simply showering will not work. I use a big knife and use the blunt edge to peel it off. First time I used a vegetable knife. Took me about an hoir to get it off lol! Also remember to put down a sheet you don't mind ruining as no matter how careful you are the stuff goes everywhere!

So when you ask your other half if they're low melting point she's bought and she says yes, check first.

Ask me how I know....

If you google 'waxplay fetish suppliers UK' then there are loads of choices plus quite a bit of advice.

Like any fireplay be sensible, the sheet to protect the carpet should be fire resistant in some way, keep a metal bucket or deep tray to hand so any burning/hot candles can be parked safely, don't wear hairspray or strong perfume, have a plan to remove the wax afterwards, a blunt knife is fine

above all...have fun !

Get proper wax play candles, they melt at a lower temperature than regular candles.

As a rule of thumb, candles with darker-coloured wax have a higher melting point. This is why wannabes who try their first wax play with cheap black goth candles tend to end up in A&E.

The further the wax has to fall, the cooler it will be when it lands. Start with the candle high, you can bring it lower depending on how the recipient reacts. As with any kinky play, start slow and work up to the recipient's limits.

Corollary to the previous point- LISTEN to the recipient's reactions (this holds true for all kinky play).

Finally, have some soothing cream and dressings on standby, just in case.

Oooooh I love me some wax play!

The general advice to avoid scented and dyed candles as these can alter the thermal profile of the wax, which is true, but in all honesty some of the candles I have had the most fun with are maxilights from Asda, which are both dyed and fragranced. Do avoid candles with metallic fragments - the metal really can cause some nasty burns.

Lay down a shower curtain, or for the ultimate in lazy a decorators sheet which can go straight into the bin afterwards. As someone else mentioned a knife to remove the wax afterwards is very useful, but you're still going to want a hot shower to get properly clean.

The best thing you can do is to use a wax melter, or double boiler with a thermometer, but this really does tend to be the playground of those of us with a DEEP love for wax. Outside of that, never let the wax pool (don't leave the candle burning, use it as soon as you light it), as this is when you are likely to increase the temperature of the wax well beyond it's melt point (remember the hottest point of a candle is somewhere around 1400°C, whilst the risks may be low, the hazard of playing like this is high). Drip the candle from a good height (as far as your arms will stretch) onto your own arm, and lower until you feel the temperature is what you are aiming for, then try it from slightly further afield on your play partner (they are likely to feel it a bit more due to the vulnerability of their situation), check their responses and take it from there.

If you are using container candles, or tealight type things, be very careful when getting to the bottom, the sustainer on candles isn't always glued in and I am aware of some people suffering nasty burns as a result of these falling out. If your bottom is hairy, some people recommend a layer of Vaseline if shaving isn't an option before hand, but again you need to be careful with this and heat transfer.

Health and safety stuff over, have a LOT of fun, make pretty pictures and enjoy using your lovers body as a canvas for your great work of art!!!

X

The first thing to know is how to recognise and deal with burns that need some sort of treatment.

A fresh burn needs cool and covered. Cling film is preferable as it stops the air from moving over the burn, which is what causes the pain but don't wrap it completely around a limb as any swelling needs to happen and not be restricted.

If in doubt, A&E.
