Fab contacts popping up as Facebook or LinkedIn recommendations

Would like some advise from someone technically minded when it comes to phones and social networking.

My husband and I both communicate via Whatsapp with a number of friends we have made via Fab. We do not have dedicated 'swing' phones. However to maintain our privacy, with those we don't know well, we do not have our last names on our Whatapp account. My husband's personal phone number is not linked to LinkedIn, but was, until yesterday, linked to Facebook. He from time to time gets suggestions from both LinkedIn and Facebook of people we know from Fab. As his number is not connected to LinkedIn, we can only assume that they popped up on LinkedIn because their number is on their LinkedIn profile.

I do not have a LinkIn account, and my mobile number has never been linked to my Facebook account. My email is, however linked to my Facebook, but I don't as a norm use my email for swinging purposes. Because I don't use Facebook very much, I have not been aware of who gets suggested as a friend. Then yesterday, a man from Fab, who had been a bit stalkerish, messaged to say that I had been suggested as a friend on Facebook. I have looked on my account, and he has been suggested to me as someone I might know. How was this possible? He does not have my email and my mobile number is not linked to Facebook. I have now been through my Facebook friend suggestions, and have identified another Fab friend who also only has my mobile number.

Is this something to do with my phone app for Facebook, putting all my data together?

I'll have a look at that. I didn't think I'd used my number for messenger. But I'm not very good at this sort of thing.

Use KIK you don't need to give your mobile number to anyone then and its not linked to anything else.

Whatsapp and Facebook will synchronize your numbers. Go into your Facebook privacy settings and have a good look around setting them as high as you can. We have a separate phone for fab, I think it's a good idea.

If the other person has your phone number and has their number linked to their FB profile I believe they will pop up on your people you may know that way.

not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds)

Faceache is incredibly invasive, whatsapp similarly, tighten you're settings on faceache , be very careful who you give your mobile number to..

Thanks everybody. Still haven't quite worked out how my number got linked to Facebook. Maybe we should use Kik until we have established trusting friendships. This is disappointing though.

Grantham

I had this problem, I think it was because I had the FB app installed at the time. I deleted it and rarely go on FB now.

Put me off totally

No we have an anonymous email for anything sexual. Then my husband has his personal email and personal mobile for Facebook, though he removed he mobile number number from Facebook yesterday. I have my personal email linked to Facebook, but never had my mobile number linked. We both use our mobile numbers fairly liberally though. My husband probably shouldn't have done, as his was connected to Facebook. But for me, Facebook and my mobile number were completely separate. Guess I was wrong. I had wondered if my phone had linked them all up, you know how contacts get joined.

No I think maybe Kik is the way forward, until I have come to trust someone. I like to be able to use my phone for both vanilla and swinging purposes and be able to respond promptly, or chat when it suits, without having to change SIM cards.

I don't use facebook but I've just looked it up. Apparently facebook requires phone number verification before you complete your registration.

At that point it gets all your contacts, so if your husband put in the his number, from that they can get your details and so on and so forth.

scary how intrusive modern technology is, isn't it.

Yes the Facebook phone app, and the facebook messenger app both scrape contact data for use in recomended friends list.

If you remove your number from facebook though while others in your contacts will be recomended to you you will not be recomended to you.

It's only scary untill you take the 30 seconds to fact check neither point you made is true.

Fb does not need a phone number veri it's optional for security.

And giving it your number will not give it your contacts.

You can disable contact syncing in rhe options of the apps too

You can simply disable contact syncing in the apps, in fb privacy settings remove your number and/or change it so that people cannot use your phone number to search for you

My number isn't on fb but this happens to me... It's when you install fb messenger and the fb app and you allow it to sync with your phone contacts... Has nothing to do with having your number on Facebook

I will find out about disabling contact syncing. But with regards to privacy settings, my number has never been linked to Facebook or Messenger, which is why I'm so bemused.

Yes I guess the problem is having the app on my phone. I'll have to find out how to not allow the app to sync with my phone contacts

This happened to me 18 months or so ago when I was on a dating site

On two separate occasions fb suggested guys I'd just started dating.

Having a mooch on their accounts I found out they were married lol.

They were none too happy but gave me a bit of fun over the next couple of days just casually dropping little nuggets of info from their day to day life into the conversation

It's all in small print of FB, LinkedIn and many other Apps. To use them you have to give them permission to use your location, files, pictures, settings and contacts. One piece of information and the algorithms of FB, LinkedIn etc data match and its not what you see that you have to worry about BUT the suggested matches they give others!!!. It's very scary just how much, Apple, Google, Facebook etc know about us all. Where ever your phone is when you have location services switched on is known why either Google or Apple. They know when you visited the Club the last time and for how long!! Apart from not having a smart phone or having so many of its features shut down there's nothing you can do.

Hi,

This is 'Big Data' in action, with Facebook YOU are the product. It makes its money by ruthlessly exploiting and analysing the data that you provide and cross matching it with other users data. It then sells the analysed data to third parties to exploit.

Google is the same. Anything and everything you post mail or write on either is collected, recorded, analysed for commercial gain. Part of suggesting contacts is to get you to confirm analyses that they have done on you.

If privacy is important you really should keep everything separate.

Never use the same email address for your swing life that you do for your daily life. Kik over what'sapp. Better still don't use any IMS (instant messaging services) at all. Facebook is a very intrusive bit of kit. It main purpose is to make money and it does that via targeting, both via people and products.

Just to add that Mark Zuckerberg is a clever bugger so good luck trying to out smart him..lol swing life and everyday life should be kept totally separate if you want to keep your privacy.

Facebook and whatsapp are one and the same essentially and as theyre run by the same company on the same servers they share data between people so whatsapp shares data about who talk to with facebook and facebook suggests them as a friend. Dont use whatsapp for swinging use kik instead you can put what ever details you like into and you wont have the same problems

LinkedIn is like AIDS, it seems to pervasively get everywhere and suggest contacts from people who you absolutely do not want to hear from. It's also a privacy nightmare because there's no way to block people or temporarily disable your profile other than disabling it.

essex just looking around

i have disabled everything and removed numbers years ago . yet i still get suggestions on all the above sites .

I rarely use FB and link was removed years ago.

I prefer to use my smart phone as it has as many good as bad benefits .. so I basically have everything on the highest security and no face or family pictures as main pictures. I do not add people i do not know and that applies for here too and no one knows where i live . If they dont know your full name have a face picture or know where you live only a crazy stalker will ever really try to connect you .. xxx
