The Internet can be a cruel place. People like to pretend on the Internet. In fact, certain people take it a little further and play an actual characters!!!!
You can NOT get away with putting on a totally new personality in real life. Sooner or later your facial expression, body language, body odour will give you away...
But when the only thing people can see is typing, you can get away with some outrageously fake characters, which might fool other online users...
Unfortunately, I think the people who pull this shit, fell for that illusion more than the people they are targeting. They want to be this cool character as badly as they want other people to think they are that character...
So....let's have a look at some of the characters:
Coach
I'm not just talking about unsolicited advice or weird criticism ('you use the word "the" too much') but all of that PLUS putting on a weird artificial character...
The difference between a normal person going around giving unwanted advice (guilty) to people and a Coach type is...more than pushy - it's a little delusional.
Spartacus
Nobody likes being singled out. So....Spartacus creates a fantasy. He imagines a whole group of OPPRESSED compatriots he's bravely standing up for.
When he finally makes his speech about the unfair treatment of newbies/outsiders/men/women....you can almost see metaphorical cry 'Who's with me?' And the result is usually dead silence (Guilty as fuck lol)
Troll
I don't think people are trying to be this character. It's just who they are... In general they are trying to cause a trouble, 'troll' others into arguing with them, they like to UPSET people...
You might experience that especially when you have a strong social presence online or at least consider yourself to be pretty active in online communities.
For example Forums.
Forums are made for discussing topics with like-minded people, but every once in a while, a troll will come in and start spreading negative words all over the place. Other forums users will often respond and before you know it, the thread goes completely off topic and becomes nothing but one big pointless argument. Sometimes they can't handle a pressure of argument they started so...they start playing a victim... hypocritical, I know.
Why people troll on Internet? God knows. Maybe they feel depressed, attention-starved, angry, sad, jealous, narcissistic or some other form emotion? Maybe is a kind of power rush or ego trip...
