Just noticed this as an option when looking at messages. But why would you use that option?

It's handy. I can read all the mail my mrs gets, then mark it "unread". Usually i leave messages that i know she won't be interested in as "read".....most i leave read.....obviously..

This, or the message comes through and we don't have time to reply then but don't want to lose the message either

I'm not sure this option is a good addition.

There's always status updates complaining about people not replying to messages or deleting them without reading them.

Since the introduction of this feature I'm just not sure as many messages are being deleted unread as people think there are?

I actually was online when a message I'd sent was being read and then it changed to unread as I refreshed the page? All it does is add doubt as to whether or not the recipient is interested.

At least before the introduction of this option you knew if it hadn't been read then it hadn't been read. Now there's just uncertainty.

If you know the message has been read and there's no reply, chances are you won't send another. If it gets marked unread then you may send another, unwanted message.

I personally don't think it's a good addition to the site.

But hey, you know what they say about opinions ....

I like the feature and use it a lot... sometimes i dont have time to reply, especially if Im popping in on.my mobile... it reminds me to reply later.

I also assume that it is very handy for couples to identify the messages they want toread later / show to their partner

If an interesting message comes in and i want to come back to it later

Unfortunately, there is a minority of people who think because you are showing online, their message is the only one you are dealing with..
