Do you still live at home? If yes then that's her choice. I found living at home I had no privacy. Moved out at 19 and gotta say it's when I was able to be sexually liberated. I'd advise getting rid of all the sexy stuff and don't hide anything that may make her suspicious.

you'll have to ask her to respect your privacy really.

my dad used to nosey in my diary and everything then slag me off for what i'd put in it, or question me about things he found in my room and i found this was part of abuse. and left home asap.

not sure if your mum's being abusive but even if she isn't you're still entitled to privacy.

We are going to take the contrary view.

The house owner own the house, they can do and go where they like, no secrets in that house from the house owner.

Anyone who does not like it can get their own home.... if any part of *our* home were held secret from us it would not be our home any longer.

We can appreciate your desire for privacy, that is why we have our own home and do not live in anyone else's.

"Home" here is defined as a living space in which you control the front door key and anything and everything that passes though it and happens behind it.

If she wants you to stay because of you paying rent, then the same rules apply as if you're a tenant. She wouldn't ask to go into the room if someone was a tenant and not her daughter. I don't go into my daughters room without knocking as she's nearly 18. I respect her privacy.

All well and good, unless you're charging rent and utilities to a tenant, as in this case. If a tenant rents a room, they have a right to privacy.

sorry but that is tosh. anyone deserves the right to privacy regardless of whether they own the place they live in or not. it is a basic human right.

I know exactly how you feel op only difference is I'm male. Parents always come in my room and do the bit of cleaning because I'm at work 14 hours a day. Everything's hidden in a box in my bed draw along with condoms etc

I've had the g/f over the night and never been caught out or had someone walk in on me. Just have to look mum in the eye and just say look it's your house but if I have the b/f over can you knock before walking in.

Otherwise it's going to be very awkward for me to explain why my g/f is tied hand and foot to the bed. It's frustrating and also a tad annoying but hide everything well enough it's all good op

How does the saying go, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

We obviously have different opinions... and we are all entitled to them.

However, we are not entitled to our own facts.

The facts are that there is an Article 8 right to privacy, but it (reading between the lines) does not apply to the OP, because she is not a tenant, she is a family member bunging some cash at the actual home owner / named tenant / mum etc in a strictly informal way, to be specific, minus a shorthold tenancy agreement on paper with signatures etc

The actual home owners / named tenant / etc's right to go *anywhere* in their own home at any time will trump any imagined "right" to privacy.

The OP is simply in a similar situation to two students sharing a house where one of them always uses the last of the milk and toilet roll and electric meter credit, there is no solution but one of them moves out.

Im confused. Firstly you say 'look in' then people are on about rooting through your stuff which is different. Has she said why she wants to look in your room.

I always went in my sons room for a chat but knocked if he was in. Same as him with mine but we would of never dreamed of going through each others stuff.

Its not wrong she wants to look in. Its her house you could have trashed the room for all she knows.

Im not sure what the big secret is surely most 23 year old girls have sex toys.

If she does want to 'root' through your stuff is it because she may think your doing something illegal in their?

At the end of the day its her property and your 23 and been able to move out for 7 years.

I think the question of who owns what is just semantics. If a person respects you they will respect the space you inhabit. If your mum doesn't then respect yourself and move out. It doesn't seem like a great loss to you either way.

It is easy to say move out, youngsters are finding it a lot harder now to find affordable housing buying or renting.

For me once our children got to a certain age we didn't invade their space at all. There are some things you really wouldn't want your mother seeing even if they suspected you may have them

This comment made me laugh .... why would you assume your mum would be shocked? That's a typical thing for a child to say about a parent, more likely you'd be surprised at what she would find. I think children often forget their parents have sex lives and years of experience too ...

She's told you she'd like to look in it. Is it because she's suspicious in some way?

I think you mentioned bedroom tax further up, as she's the tenant - she's responsible for everyone who lives there. So I kind of understand her wanting to pop her head around the door to check it all looks ok. She's not saying she wants to go in every nook and cranny or is that what she wants to do?

Alternatively leave your lover tied naked to the bed with a dildo inserted into some orifice, and see if she dares to go in again...

I think the word adult hits the nail on the head here. The OP is an adult and her privacy should be respected, regardless of who owns the house or is the tenant. If I had guests I wouldn't walk into their room and go through their personal items,I certainly wouldn't do it to one of my adult children.

"I don't even go into my teenage son's room. It's his space and I respect his right to privacy. "

As it happens, I never went into my teenage sons room either, it was mostly tidy enough. My teenage daughter however we argued constantly as her room stank the house out, and I had to do raids every now and then to recover crockery and cutlery when the kitchen was empty... I was glad when she moved out to be honest, love her to bits but she was an awful teenager.

"My mum let herself in to my house when I was at work. She decided to clean house which was very sweet. She found lube under my bed. Condom packet on table which I found in a party bag and gave my son the cock sweets I had been given for my birthday. I quickly took them off him and threw them out lol. Suffice to say my house is now well checked before she arrives now.

"

How old is your son?

"Tell her to piss right off and keep her nosey beak out of what doesn't concern her - simple, job done !

...do people actually allow their adult children to talk to them like that in their own homes?!!

I think the word adult hits the nail on the head here. The OP is an adult and her privacy should be respected, regardless of who owns the house or is the tenant. If I had guests I wouldn't walk into their room and go through their personal items,I certainly wouldn't do it to one of my adult children. "

Indeed, adults should be living in their own homes, paying their own bills not living with their parents: can't have it both ways.

I respected my children's privacy and they knew better than trying to lay down any kind of rules/demands in my house they were living in for free whilst working.

I myself live with parents and have said problem. I find my way around it is that I hide all sexual stuff in my bags. All are stored away in boxes. My parents only go in my room if they wish to borrow a tool (my bedroom is also a workshop for my job, so I have hammers and power tools stored away). If you hide it in places they won't look, it'll be fine

"it's not normal really, no. but if she's worried about you i'd say fair enough but i still wouldn't let any adult root through my shit.

Im out all time and go out most nights if im not working i go regularly to a number buddies place for a weekend x

iv got a safe in my room for valuable items x"

Put your toys n condoms in your safe then....! Simple enough.

You live in her house, so technically it is her room....!

"

That's my point. Whilst I respect my children's privacy, and wouldn't dream of snooping around "their" room, it's a room I allow them to live in for free, so the thought of them telling me to piss off in a house I've worked to pay for...they're not duppy conquerors!

I go into my kids rooms to retrieve dishes and washing and to open the windows etc. I don't look at or for anything else. Whilst my son was away recently though, he gave us permission to redecorate his room .... with a floor plan drawn out as to what he wanted. This meant I went through all of his papers and clothes, but to be honest, apart from organising it and dumping all his old exam stuff, I want particularly interested in anything. He's just 18 and I trust him to make his own decisions or talk to one of us if he needs any help. My 14 year old has condoms in her room because they were given them at school ..... mad but true.
