Tips when arranging a social

Stoke area

I am thinking about arranging a Social in Staffordshire. I would love to hear any useful advise about numbers , whether to charge and do buffet etc or just get a private room in a pub.

My main aim is to give people a chance to meet others, and get verified if new.

Thoughts please.......

Mae did a brilliant job with the central London one, and we also know the lady who organises the Heathrow one ... although we haven't been. I think its important not to publicise the venue, but also not to overthink it. Mae organised hers with short notice as people were saying no one meets in central London for socials, she just got on with it. Not sure about your area though ...

id have thought a room in a pub would be sufficient, then if people wanted to eat they could, and also have a drink too...all you really need is somewhere where people know but obviously only give out the details to people who you know will definitely turn up

Brighton - even Hove!

I was thinking of a Brighton social too. Interested to hear some further advice. I saw a thread the other day about not letting single men attend a social.

There are two clubs in Stoke that you could approach as a venue

A pub or neutral place is the best idea

You Dont Need to Know, right now

"There are two clubs in Stoke that you could approach as a venue "

The problems with holding a social in a swingers clubs are 1) clubs rarely close to their usual members, so 2) the socialisers will have to pay the entrance fee (usually so high for single men that they would be reluctant to turn up) and 3) the combination of playing members and high entrance fees can lead to people expecting to be playing - not really what a social is for.

A private room in a pub is a better idea.

on the road to nowhere in particular

1: don't publicise the venue

2: don't lay out any money

Could you not just do it in a fairly largeish pub in say the late afternoon on a weekend(before it gets busy), and then see what happens/how it goes?

That way there's no layout(thus stopping the cynical thinking it's one of those 'pay' parties(a la Real Deal which goes on in Birmingham)and getting put off)so reduction of you getting stressed, and people will turn up gradually in dribs and drabs, and because you've not forked out you can have low expectations and if it does get a bit throngy then it'll be a pleasant surprise.

If the numbers get too large then you can shifyt the venue as it's happening and go somewhere bigger and just put a notice up on the thread noting the change of venue(which latecomers would automatically refer to if they turn up to nobody being there)?

I think a pub would be less scary for newbies. By the way I know of Atlantis.....what is the other club you refer to ?

i would have tended to say to people to go to someone elses social first and talk to people there and the organisers to see what they went thru to get to where they are...

i would always say don't be too ambitious for the first one or two... keep it simple as there is them much less that can go wrong.....

That's a good tip, but the reason I am thinking of organising a social is that I can't find one to attend near me.

But I will start with a private room in a pub and take it from there. Thanks.

We hold ours in a private function room of a bar. Our socials are free but we hold a raffle so we can have sweets and nibbles and put on entertainment like burlesque and rope and wax demos.

We invite people along like local club owners or sex toy shops so that they can promote themselves and people can see whats out there.

We've accepted we aren't going to please everyone but we ask people what they'd like at the socials and do our best to give it to them. xxx

village between York and Hull

The first social we attended was at a workingmens club but it was already established so had a lot of people there. One of the best ones we went to was when a group of us in York decided to arrange a Secret pub meet. We decided what pub then put up an add told everyone it would be a city centre pub and the date but did not disclose the location untill 2 days before and evryone who attended had to wear a paper clip either on their coller or sleve. It was a massive success and a great night. There was no outlay for a room etc and only those in the know knew. It was a good way to get it up and running. Now the organisers of the York social struggle to find venues big enough to hold everyone!!

Thanks for the information. Raffle to pay for nibbles is a good idea. I didn't want to charge.
