Condoms and dental dams.

I don't know the true risks but to the best of my knowledge you can contract oral gonnorhea, herpes and I recently heard chlamydia but you will get the most accurate information from your GUM clinic

I feel the (low) risk with oral sex is completely exaggerated..

Kissing presumably fits into the same category...

The only safe sex is no sex. Oral sex with a condom and a dam (just like nice couple said) is the safest you can get. Banana flavour condoms?

Flavoured are vile in my experience Skyns are best if they're going in your mouth.

My top tip is never put your mouth near a delay condom

One can contract STIs from oral sex. Even HIV, if one has any cuts or abrasions in the mouth or bleeding gums

Last I heard, marriage certificates do not protect against these risks; however, condoms and dental dams can reduce the risk

I take the risk. Have never used protection for oral. I get checked regularly when I'm meeting. I've never contracted anything. I'll continue to take the risk. For me it's acceptable.

I've been advised to by my Dr, due to low inumune system thanks to being run down and deep seated nasal infection.have had a cold since sept.

Not my ideal way to give a bj but at the end of the day my health comes first and if a man doesn't like it then happy not to meet .

It's good that you're being aware of the risks and want to reduce them. I recently spent a lot of time talking to the local GUM clinic regarding this same issue. They said that whoever is 'receiving' is at more risk and letting a man cum in your mouth has a slightly higher risk than giving a woman oral as even though there is fluid with women, most of the oral involves the outside of the woman and so less contact with the possible infected fluid. I guess with a man, even if he doesn't cum in your mouth (which is riskier), it's still possible to contract things via the pre cum.

As somebody else has said, any tiny cut in or around the mouth increases the risk and so if you have an ulcer or bleedings gums, it's best to take extra precautions unless you have evidence that they are 'clean'. That's very hard because even if a person has tested clean on a specific date, doesn't mean they haven't contracted something since the test date or in fact contracted HIV within the window where it wouldn't yet show up on a test.

Basically I think you have to be realistic, the percentage of people who contract STIs purely from oral sex is very low but it does happen. For me personally I don't allow men to cum in my mouth and so the risk to me is very small and in my opinion, worth it. However, you can still make sure you don't floss just before oral (I know you want to have squeaky clean teeth before a meet but maybe do it a few hours before) as this can cause tiny cuts in the gum.

All of this is based on advice from health professionals who deal with this every single day. You can't have safe sex but you can do your best to make it as safe as possible. Make sure you ask for throat swabs when you have regular testing. Staff are lovely and completely non judgemental. Have fun!

Ultimately, every time you have any sexual contact with anyone who isn't a completely exclusive, tested, monogamous partner is a risk.

Certain things are lower risk than others, and it's up to the individual what risk they do an do not take. As far as oral goes, I take the risk. It's mine to take, I'm going in informed, and frankly the worse case scenarios are within my personal limits.

But, let's be under no illusion, safe sex doesn't exist, and those of us in open sexual circumstances are at high risk. Honestly, with yourself and with others is paramount here. The bit about porn none of us see is the multiple forms about STD's. Be wary of that.

Don't scrub your teeth hard just before sex either because it can leave minute invisible cuts which could allow virus's in - clean your teeth a couple of hours before and use mouthwash just before.

we had some great advice off a couple on here (via their GUM clinic) to gargle with Corsodyl shortly after oral of any kind (so we keep some in locker at club, for instance) . Also get checked regularly. As others have said , oral with condoms isn't ideal
