"Out of Messages"

I often see status messages for people saying they've run out of messages on here - I was unaware there was a quota. I've never experienced this issue - is it true that you can run out of messages?

I think you can if you are not a site supporter.

Been here 8 years and never run out of messages though.

You must get a lot of messages too (and assuming you reply to them) would be pushing the limit if there is one.
