Never too late, it's simply in the mind. Start off little, instead of driving to the shop, walk or cycle.

Instead of the lift, take the stairs

Motivation can only come from within and wanting to see yourself improve.

If you ain't got that then you may as well not bother

Set achievable goals. Sort your diet out. Start slow, no point going in, thinking you are 23 and crocking yourself first go.

Listen to your body...its a journey not a destination

Try getting a gym buddy that way you drag one another to the gym. Start slow and build up gradually, set challenging but achievable targets and go on set days at the same time where possible.

Its never too late to start.all it is discipline with the food, and getting into a routine.i use my lunch break, and straight after work for training.within weeks you can see results.be that weight loss or definition, once that buzz kicks in you then want to go training, you want to eat right, its no longer an ordeal but something integral to your life that you enjoy doing.i say go for it.

It's cliche, but the only person who can motivate you IS you. People can give words of encouragement, but unless YOU really want to do it, then it's never going to happen. I (Mr) have found that out the hard way. Took up MTB again after a 15 year gap and joining the gym this weekend.

As people have already said though, small changes will work out better in the long term. Slowly slowly catchy monkey.

You start to see some result after 3months, but a year or so you can see much more, remember tho, if nutrition is not there you don't make progress.

Yes focus like on protein mostly and reduce the carbs, just have most of the carbs pre and post meals around ur training then later the day less and less carbs. Chicken, salmon, eggs and mince are good protein sources.

If you're just wanting to lose weight then running is your best bet, cycling is good to but it'll take a lot longer or use the cross trainer if you're at the gym then it'll be lighter on your joints without having to cycle for hours. If by 'gym guys' you mean muscle then obv you've just got to lift heavy weights! Often and heavy

It's 50% diet too so write a healthy shopping list and stick to it

Shit, I'm 50 and hit the weights three times a week. I also walk and bike ride during the week. You just got to find something you like to do and stay with it. In my case with the resistance training, I try to mix up my workouts so my body doesn't get used to it and to keep my outlook fresh. I further have to work out for my job so I can come home in one piece. If a group motivates you, do it. If you want to work alone, do that. Just be comfortable.

No definitely not. YouTube is the best place to learn from home - try searching OmarIsuf bc he posts a lot of educational and motivational videos and take it from there. It's easier to lift heavy weight and to build muscle when you have a bit of fat, but you're obviously wanting to look good as oppose to being strong so make sure you get a good 30mins in at the end of each weight session on a cross trainer then you can get stronger and lose fat at the same time.

Also you'll hear a lot of people say that if you want to lose weight lift light more times, ignore that. You'll have to lift light to learn technique for a few weeks (it's best to find a gym buddy, watch youtube and ask others who are more experienced at your gym every time you got for the first month) but the more you put in the more you get out.

Age is just a number! I still go n its mind over matter. Some decent music, earphones on n ignore ppl around u. Can be a bit intimidating BUT worth watching wot other ppl do n make notes. Perhaps speaking to the gym PT n let them start u on a programme then the rest is down to u. Good luck

"So how long does it take too see major results ? "

I started running this year, then shortly after started doing some core exercises. I now do a plan that covers all muscle groups alongside cardio. It helps that R is an ex personal trainer so sets my plans. I would recommend engaging a pt.

I wasn't interested in weight loss although that would be nice, I wanted a better body shape. So at the start of each month I take naked pictures front side and back. Comparing these pictures showed progress within a month and really motivates me to see my shape improve so dramatically. I intend to get that toned gym body but just seeing how far I've come is reward for now.

All this started at 35

Good luck OP

Nothing is going to make you look awful unless you go extreme. Don't look for specifics just get a good all round plan that builds strength, stamina and suppleness.

Once you've got the bug and the habit then speak to people about what really floats your boat...

" I just want to look in mirror and not see a fat dude looking back . Plus want too feel good about me . I can't expect anyone too feel good about me if I don't about myself ! "

There's your motivation right there. Use that in your head every time you say to yourself 'why should I go to the gym today even though I don't feel like it'

It's generally accepted among the fitness profession that the reason most people give up is they don't see results quickly enough. Take the thought that you'll be a chiselled Adonis within 3 months out of your head.

Engage a PT for the most important first 3 months to get you into a habit of going to the gym. Once you're into that habit and break the cycle of not wanting to go, it's all gravy. Judge your results on physical size not the scales. Throw them away if you have any, so many folk fail again because they're slaves to the scales.

London

I'm 54, morbidly obese and struggled to walk. I loved to eat, loathed to move. Last November I walked past a gym offering free membership for three months plus a personal trainer. I had just been diagnosed with type two diabetes.

I go every other day. I look in the mirror and see no difference but others have. My sister showed a picture of me to her daughter and she asked who's that? She didn't recognise me.

The other trainers have commented how impressed they are: I took that with a pinch of salt until the gym bunnies paid me compliments.

My clothes are now too big, I can pull down the table on planes and trains and my diabetes has reversed.

I have a long way to go, but the benefits so far encourage me to go. I basically eat what I like, just in moderation and choose the healthy option mostly. For example I've swapped full fat for skimmed milk. Wholegrain rice/pasta for white. I limit my carbs: none after six, if I do I walk it off/work in the garden.

I can feel the muscle under the fat. I'm now at the weight I was 13 years ago. By the end of the year I'll weigh less than I did when I married 34 years ago...that's my goal. It will take me about another year to get down to my ideal weight, but I'm not rushing it, slow and steady and it'll stay off.

It depends what you mean by results. If you approach it correctly in terms of observing your performance you'll notice that you can lift more/run for longer after 3 to 4 weeks than when you started.

In terms of seeing results when you look at your body though I'd agree with Shag, after about 3 months you will notice the difference and possibly a year for major change.

When i reach the level i want i will maintain it not progress it. This is why i swim rather than go to a gym

"How do u guys get motivated to do it wish I could . At 40 prob too late now . "

At age 41 I found I'd grown to 15.5 stone which was mostly fat, after being slim and toned for most of my life. Olympics in 2012 kick started me into doing something about it, started running, lost 3.5 stone.

Last few months started on the weights (bought my own as far too self conscious to go to a gym lol), and now still got some way to go but not doing too bad, take a look at my pics. Not quite washboard abs, and still largely a one pack, but when I tense there are hints of the old six pack back...so I'd say if I wasn't too old at 41 then you certainly aren't too old at 40. Good luck.

Motivation is such an individual thing. For me it's my son, being fit and healthy for him has motivated me to join the gym, start swimming and playing rugby again. I hope one day me and my son can play in the same team.
