Try with him on his side knees drawn up rather than on his knees. His butt will be more relaxed that position.

Lube and something small, like a finger if his 'valve' has only been one way so far. It takes a little while for it to understand it can work both ways.

Trim your nails and file them nice and smooth and rounded (not freshly cut!)

I'd always go for some lube rather than spit - I can take a fist and don't like anything up there which isn't lubed!
