You dont really want to go for a cheap or second hand hot tub as you can never know its history. Having said that, don't get taken in by the comments about all Chinese Hot Tubs being rubbish. Almost all of the component parts that make up so called "quality" hot tubs are made in China and simply assembled in Canada / USA.

We bought our first hot tub from a Chinese importer and paid £2,000 for it delivered. We had it for three years until the control panel broke and at the same time the main pump and ozonator reached the end of their natural lives. It is par for the course to replace the pump and ozonator every two or three years but the main panel was not a common make and so replacing it would not have been cost effective.

We bought a much better tub next time around from "Mr Tubby" and we are now into year 4 with this one. Changed the main pump and ozonator last year but the Balboa control panel is still going strong.

I would say minimum spec should be to have an ozonator, "brand name" control panel as well as separate circulation and jet pumps. Good insulation and a high quality cover as well as a weather cover to protect the insulation cover are essential if you want to keep electricity costs under control. Also a single person cover lifter is a very useful accessory.
