Bit of advice needed please and virtual hugs too.

I had my smear test recently and have had a letter from surgery asking me to make a telephone appointment with my gp. It says not to be concerned but I'm quite worried. Does anyone know if they can detect std from a smear test?

It's more likely they found abnormal cells that they want to investigate further

Not unless you ask them to at the same time.

It could just be that they haven't collected enough cells, I've had it twice now. I wouldn't worry until you've seen your gp. I know that's easier said than done xx

Well it can detect cells that have changed on the cervix which can be caused by HPV / Chlamydia infection.

If was something serious they'd phoned and got you in, not send a letter and then wait on you making an appointment.

If the letter says not to be worried, its likely they have an inconclusive result due to not enough cells collected.

Phone and make another appointment as soon as possible.

I read somewhere that only 1% of all abnormal smears turn out to be cervical cancer, I found those statistics very reassuring xxx

I've had abnormal smears x 3

I've been invited for further tests, ie the large magnifying thing (I've forgotten the proper name)

I've been monitored now for the last year and my last smear came back as normal.

So now I'm still on the 6 months monitoring list, but at all stages it is nothing to worry about.

Easier said than done but try not to worry. Worst thing they can do putting nothing to worry about. That would cause anyone to do so in my opinion.

Unlikely op.

I've had a few borderline tests in the past. Abnormalities but nothing to worry about. Had to have test repeated in hospital outpatients and went 6 monthly for 2 years. Back to normal routine ones now.

Try not to worry. I had a smear last year that detected CIN 3 cell changes. Went for colposcopy and discovered the cell changes were CIN1.

Have to have another colposcopy in a couple of months.

Even if you have CIN3. There is still low risk of it developing into anything nasty so try not to worry.

If you have regular smear tests I wouldn't worry

I had the same last year and was told I had abnormal cells, I was so worried, but honestly it's so common and can be dealt with if need be. You'll be ok

I had abnormal cells two years ago and had to go for a biopsy and laser treatment. Same again last year, but had the all clear from last two smears. Thank god for regular smear testing. Was still a worry but I knew I was in good hands.

I don't know if they can detect a std from a smear but I think your gp would tell you something like that face to face rather than in a telephone appointment

Nope they don't, you still get a letter even if it appears that the results are sinister. I got one saying that my test results were abnormal and I was being referred for colposcopy. I was sent for my appointment within two weeks where the consultant told me that they suspected that the abnormality was cancer. They did the colposcopy under a local anesthetic and removed just over a third of my cervix right there and then. It was then sent for testing which showed stage 1a1 cancer with clear margins (which means that they got it all)

I don't think they'd detect an STD unless they were actually asked to test for any. Which I usually get them to do....while they're up there

As others have said it is most likely nothing to worry about, hopefully you'll get another appointment soon to put your mind at rest.

Try not to worry. If it's abnormal cells and if HPV present, they probably either want to monitor you with 6 monthly swears, or send you for a coposophy at the hospital - not as bad as a sounds though (I've had several...). It's unlikely to develop into anything sinister at this stage (can take at least 10 years for anything to develop!), but it's good that your GP is having you in to chat to you, instead of send just a letter out.

As others have said if it was worrying the would t have used snail mail. Also you should t really have anything to worry about regarding sti's unless you have not been sensible and played bareback!! Hope it's all ok

I have had cervical cancer. I was called into my local hospital for a test. So i very much doubt this is anything to worry about. But go asap to put your mind at ease. But I was sent an appointment with the letter saying I had abnormal cells found that they needed to investigate further. Xx

They DO use snail mail when it is sinister! They send you a letter telling you that there are abnormal cells and giving you an appointment at the hospital

The letter I got was horrendous, using phrases like 'severe grade cell changes'

and 'you probably havent got cancer, however' in big red lettering.

To be fair they gave me an appointment within two weeks to be seen. But still I think they could of worded the letter better

It was exactly the same for me (I posted from couple account further up the thread) I had an appointment at the hospital within two weeks of the letter and received immediate treatment that day. Lab tests confirmed that the removed tissue was cancer but that they had got it all. I was followed up with a scan to check it hadnt spread to lymph nodes and put on six monthly smear tests for the next ten years.

Incidentally, its been two years since my last test but my gp cannot offer me an appointment on a day when I'm not at work, yet keep sending reminders. I've had to resort to booking in with the local family planning clinic to get it done.......fingers crossed for tomorrow

I remember getting a copy of my lab report after my last smear attached to the letter and it said chlamydia negative, ghonorea negative, HPV positive high risk and then the numbers of the two types of HPV I've got. So they did check for std's while they were up there. I had my colposcopy last month and grade one cells were present. So I am being monitored and waiting for my body to fight off the HPV. Ironically, the two types of HPV they found are not the types that girls are being vaccinated against in school! Just my luck. X

This is a horrible way to tell you that information. A letter asking you to come in or phone up as there may be a problem is enough.

I phoned my surgery this morning and have a telephone appointment where my gp is going to call me tomorrow after 330. So another day wondering what they are going to say.

My fb works in a lab, testing this that and the other. I asked him about it and he says they dont use smsear tests for testing for sti/std.

Just a quick update. I had my gp telephone call today and my smear test is all clear for anything abnormal.

A big thank you to everyone who gave me great advice and support, it meant a lot and stopped me going totally crazy.
