Is it better to book hotels through the hotel's own website or can you get better deals by searching around? Are there any sites you would recommend?

Hoping to get a few road trips in this year!

I think lastminute is the best comparison site by far. Also the 'Top Secret' rooms are often great discounts! laterooms has occasional good deals. Try trivago too.

Travelodge doesn't use comparison sites, and premier inn deals are best when booked in advance.

Airbnb if you feel adventurous

. Varies. Going direct to the hotel will not always be cheaper as sone are reluctant to advertise such a deal on their own website . I would checking booking.com , then having found. one that you like , check on the hotels web site before booking . If booking through booking.com check the terms carefully before confirming . I booked a hotel in Cap d Agde next June and have now found out that I cannot. change the date as the booking is non rerfundable and the money has already been taken from my bank account.

Booking dot com are good. If you book through them you don't normally pay a deposit and a lot of rooms are cancellable upto the day you've booked.

. That is what I though but two hotels took full payment from me as soon as I booked even though the visits were nine months ahead. Bookings were non cancellable as well.

I have to be honest and say I have never found much of a discount using comparison websites.

The best deal I got was checking online then phoning my chosen hotel and asking what was there best rate for booking on the phone ,,, a Cpl of hotels would not play ball but got a good deal eventually !!!!

We look at the comparison sites and the double check the hotels website to see which is cheaper as we have found it varies.

can also depend on the hotel chain as some will undercut the bed banks.

always worth looking at bookings.com and then check with the hotel directly.

As an ex guest house owner, check on line sites the ring them direct, tell them what the price was on the net and ask them what there best rate is, online sites charge up to 30% booking fee to the hotels

One tip I learned recently, is if you can't find a free room for your specific date, try adding a day (so making a 1 night a 2 night booking) and then see what happens. Sometimes you will get a booking (which you make, and then amend)

call the hotel, insist the give you better pricee/upgrade, rather than book on another site, they avoid the commission fees and the room allotment booked through those sites.

I use booking.com whenever the hotel I want is on there, always cheaper than the hotels own site.

Depends how flexible you are(days and dates not in the bedroom)

Certain nights of the week are cheaper than others

Travelodge release some very cheap rooms now and again but don't expect all the extra facility's that other hotels might have, however the rooms are clean and beds are comfy)some are located on motorways and service station areas so check the location before you book.

Premier inns seem to be going up and up in price each year and are a world away from the prices they used to charge

I like the laterooms website for seeing whats available in an area but premier inn and Travelodge don't appear so you need to view there own sites
