I just noticed that messages further down my messages are deleted. Is there any way to retrieve a past message from a specific person?

Are you sure they're deleted or just not showing? If you haven't personally deleted them they as far as I know should still be there. Try deleting some and you'll see some older ones appear at the bottom of your received list, continue to delete until you have the one you're looking for. Worth before deleting saving the ones you'd like to keep, not bad practise actually as you can keep a record of the conversations if the convos go cold but reignite later on, it's always nice knowing what was said before.
