Hey guys. Unfortunately our laptop has broke and we've had to take it to a computer repair shop. All we're worried about is the hundreds of naughty pics/ videos we've got saved on there!!

Does anyone know if it's possible/likely for them to go mooching through our files once (if) they fix it?

Makes me cringe thinking of a greasy, slobbering computer geek wanking over our vids and saving them for his private collection!

I think it's best to assume they haven't looked and carry on accordingly.

You might be able to tell if they've looked by looking at recent files but what will you do if they have?

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I think we need to get a bit tech savvy in future and learn what an external hard drive is! Lol.

I just hope they're decent, honest people. The place has good reviews and it's been around for more than ten years so we might just be paranoid

careful where you store your stuff - if its already gone in, then it's too late to worry.

In future, if you must keep stuff on your laptop (better to use usb drives/sticks), then at least enable Windows encryption on the folder(s) (google how to do it - it's simple and at least it's one step)

We get seduced by the technology into thinking it will always work. It's always advisable to have a backup, best if it's encrypted - I use truecrypt, it's free and fairly strong security

I'm sure they do this all the time but would say they don't, this is - for example - how the likes of Gary Glitter etc was found out for having very inappropriate material on his PC after taking it in for repair.

Buy an external hard drive for future storage

The hard drive usually has a screw down cover over it for this very purpose. Depending on the manufacturer, it may be secured with Torx screws, but it's easy to pick up the right screwdrivers for the job.

It's really not difficult. No more complicated than changing a plug.

As for the advice given about an external USB drive for future use, excellent suggestion.

I spent nineteen years in the trade. Even before PC repair we had to process and develop 35mm slides and prints. Working in the Fleet Street branch in the early nineties, we came across some pretty eye-raising stuff. However, it's was simply not worth your job or a scene in the store with an irate customer to comment on anything.

Hundreds of PCs pass through these service centres each week. With tight deadlines and vicious disciplinary procedures most engineers will just get the job done and move on.

Had to have both my lap top and PC repaired recently . Have both pictures and videos of me with various different people on both. Whilst these are private , I assumed that those who repair them see so many pictures , mine would be of little interest to them. Hope I was correct in making that assumption as quite a few people asked to be filmed with me and one bloke videos every session with his wife and shows to other couples.

Honestly you have two choices..

1. Just accept the fact that they will have a look. There is little chance that they will share your stuff, they must come across this stuff all the time!

2. just write the pic and vids off and buy a new lappy and be done with it!

Oh and yes you do need to learn what an external hard drive is lol

Honestly I would not worry to much and if its cost effective just hand it over and smile sweetly when you pick it back up

It made me think. If the ip address has all your info.. then they'd charge - bit like icloud.

I guess if you're online they could look but when you think of all the computers in use at any one time you'd need the equivalent number monitoring x but that's just not logical x

It will depend on the fault if the hard drive has failed then you may havd lost them all.

Various people have mentioned external hard drives and SD cards. As one of the last few posters has amply shown, these only shift the problem... as what happens if you drop your SD card in the local cafe... or what if your external drive corrupts and you want an expert to rescue the contents. Whilst they are a good idea... that helps move you in the right direction... the right solution to this problem is always going to be encryption and a strong password to decrypt things.

Any encryption software should work... don't use Windows password protected folders or password protected zips... other 3rd party software is better. And make sure your password is so extraordinarily long and complex that even an automated password unlocking piece of software would take a month trying to guess it

Oh and don't... I repeat don't... forget the password lol

I'm quite glad they caught him. hope you get yours sorted though without hassle. my netbook wouldn't let me log on, kept on about proxy servers, I was quite worried about it because of Fab, anyway today did numerous updates and it seems okay

If there is nothing clearly criminal them they should not react much.

However it is a risk that they will look and possibly copy.

The only way to protect in the future is have them on a separate drive or to use some encryption software to encrypt the selected folders.

Total bollox... An IP address is something which gives you an address on the internet... it's a bit like your phone number, but you can feasibly get a different one every time you connect, especially if you switch off your router when you're not using it.... If you take your laptop to someone else's house, or connect to a hotspot, you'll never have the same IP that you do at home.

Total rubbish!!

From a previous post I got the impression the computer booted but they got BSoD, black screen of death, a very common problem with Windows, so I would have said it was a software problem, likely due to an update, stop scaremongering and claiming to be an expert, like the guy who said it was IP related!

To the OP, don't worry, but please check out how to do a safe reboot in future.

( F2, F8, usually, depending on your computer maker and software they have installed ).

As above, don't worry they are not interested in private adult pictures, and you may be lucky that they only do a safe reboot and a system roll back, so would not have wiped your private files.

are suggesting external harddrives, some of the next generation down more modern approach with sd cards

Well the young generation (which sadly I'm not just up to speed with technology) will tell you to use a cloud service, we use several in everyday life which is great, dropbox to name one simple multi device one, log into it on phone, mac, pc anywhere with user name and password, so easy nothing to lose access anywhere

It depends how busy they are, if they have a lot to fix they will do them as fast as possible and not bother looking.

When you get it back, have a look at your files and sort them by last accessed, then you can see what time and date they were viewed.

The well known PC. Chain will have very strict privacy procedures and would instantly dismiss or discipline employees breaching them even down to the point of opening files or programmes they dont need to. The last thing the company would want is complaints their staff do this and if a customer did make a complaint they would investigate and the individual would need to explain in detail why they opened a file to repair a screen.

Yes they may have a crefty peep but anything more could result in dismisall.

Can we all look at the pics and vids to judge if they are acceptable

oh get real what garry glitter done was against the law and the company had a duty to report him. Similarly the same as banks have to if they encounter money laundering.

What they will clamp down on are employees breaching customers trust not the law of the land 2 totally seperate issues. But then its normal here for people to make statements to have conflict.....oops did i just make one

I think what your referring to is not the norm i pguess if any celebrity taking their pc in for repair the files would be viewed from a curiosity point of view.

When most computers begin to fail you can put them in safe mode meaning u can log onto a users profile without a password, it is most likely the can get on to ur profile as they might need to adjust things which only the administrator can do, if they look through the files then they are disrespectful and to be honest u will never know. The best advice I saw would have been to take the harddrive out or not to save them directly to your computer x

I repair laptops for a living and if it makes you feel any better i almost never bother to look at customers photos.

One thing I'd like to set straight: no decent repair engineer will agree to receive a laptop repair without the hard drive. For most cases you need to boot the laptop to check all works fine. Its true you can do many repairs without receiving the hard drive but it's bad practice from a techs point of view.

I made the mistake once of agreeing to a repair without the HD and it caused me no end of problems.

With respect to external storage id suggest a NAS drive as opposed to usb drives.

Safe Mode doesn't give access to the users profile either.

I have fixed many a computer and only been intreagued when I was told not to look... Lol. I never did and often it will be a simple fix. If it requires recovering data form a corrupt drive they might give it to you on an external drive anyway. And a nas box sounds good. It is essentially an external hard drive that connects to your router and you can save to it... Or backup to it

Just get a working pc and connect your disk drive as a slave. Find your pics and move them off the faulty drive. Reconnect and take faulty pc in for repair

Of course if you knew how to do that you'd have already done it.

As an ex it professional id say dont worry take it in. Weve all seen it before.

If the pics arent important and nothing is important wipe the drive .

Most common used to be teenage lads bringing in pcs with gf pics usually a topless one as the main desktop picture.

A shop will usually be discrete as they want no come back, especially over sex related issues. Its bad for business!

If you want to encrypt look up pgp.

If your worried about private pics being seen dont do them!

From my experience in the computer industry for nearly 20 years. I'm normally to busy to go snooping, and most home naughty photos I came across when recovering files went in the seen it before category and were forgotten by end of the day and at the end of it all your paying me to do a job I wont get good recommendations if I sit back and get my jolies for your pics.

About 10 years ago, and before we got into

this, ours broke.we took it too a shop and asked them to save all the pictures on it. . All clean as we thought! Only when we picked it up with a disc of our pictures did we find out what our 16 year old son had been looking at . .

Apparently saving pictures means 'everything '. . .

Hasten to add i did hand him the disc and ask him to delete them before his sister got hold of it . . Should've seen the look on his face . .

We then purchased our 'own' laptop . .

I would not worry - they will see the pictures and everyonre in the shop will have fun but remember they see this on hundreds of repairs and will not copy them as their jobs are more important.

Its a good thing that they do look remember that is how tht sicko nasty Gary Glitter got caught

Yes it's possible. Make sure you spend some money and buy an external hard drive. Recom. WD(Western Digital).WD provides a software to lock your data and it's free of charge. Do not buy refurbished ones on ebay. Keep all the pictures in your ex. hard drive.

Do not save pictures in the pc or laptop copy straight away from camera to the ex.HD.

Deleting something on the computer means you're actually deleting the index file. So the computer cannot find the place of data and the access name for data. All the data remains until they been overwrite.

People(most of the IT guys) do care about others privercy but some take advantage.

Don't do the same mistake again.

It was because of a technical problem with his laptop that Gary Glitter got caught, it froze so he took it in for repair and the tech bods found his pics and reported him to the police.

I agree with other post in using an external drive. Anything you want kept private should be put onto external storage only, solid state drives are 99.999% reliable so there is no reason to have everything on your laptop. Even if you sell on your laptop and wipe the drive, technology exists to recover most of what was on it.

Best hope the tech guys don't go too deep into your machine and copy your pics, you will know by the look on their faces when you go to collect it if they are in on your secret.

We had to put our laptop in for repair some time ago. It was a profile not recognised issue which is a very common problem on windows 7. I tried to fix it myself using the online instructions but it didn't work.

We therefore used a local independent repair service. We had lots of private pics and videos on it at the time, which we transferred to an external hard drive and then deleted them all from the laptop.

However, it would appear that unless you have professional software to erase files, then they can still be found even after deleting if you know where to look.

The repair guy took great pleasure in phoning us up and telling us that he was unable to sort out various things and re formatting problems due to the "adult content" on the laptop. It was obvious that he had found and seen various stuff. It was all rather embarrassing.

We were charged £65 and got the laptop back and saw that some stuff we had deleted were now back on the laptop.

The worst thing was that 4 days later the exact same problem occurred on the laptop and we haven't been able to use it since. We are very reluctant to put it back in for repair again !!

If anyone is local to us who could look at it, then do feel free to get in touch !!

I don't believe that any it guy is going to spend much time or effort looking for deleted items unless they're obvious.... After all, time is money.

This will just empty your recycle bin, it will not delete anything from your drive.

If you wish to really delete them then wipe the empty space on your hard drive.

This will re-write all the files on the drives empty with a sting of zeros and the files will not be viewable again.

Check out GlaryUltilies, you may find it more helpful than just emptying your recycle bin.

I really doubt this "techy" could not reformat your hard drive due to adult content.
