why when i check my posts that i have done in the past why can i not delete them when they been on here for ages

The posts stay forever (unless they get 'Ruggered' or 'Jezzed' and end up in forum hell/heaven) - you can search back to the very first threads!

Besides - its often useful to hit that little green arrow and see someone's previous posts.

Amazing what can be discovered sometimes!
