Fair point but this one was a portable printer. I just sold the customer a new laptop and printer. The knowhow lads had no idea how install the printer at all. So I did it working over Bluetooth. all of 5 minutes job.

As I said some of the Knowhow bar staff aren't as good as some, I get customers coming from all the other store because they can't fix them and we can

This is all a bit silly it could be a varity of problems from a duff charger to a dead battery or motherboard, it needs to be looked at by someone who knows what they are doing and a few snippets of odd stuff to try on a forum probably wont help you much.

stuff like

"take the hard drive out" helps no one :P

Best bet is to find a local "pc" shop (someone trustworthy) or an engineer and they will be able to diagnose it for you, I would offer my own services but not sure thats the sort of thing done on FAB !

"You will be surprise the about of laptop I fixed with a dead screen that was the hard drive stopping the laptop from booting up?"

Thats almost impossible as the bios is loaded first ( from the motherboard ) therefore a PC/laptop will POST it just may not load windows ( located on hard drive )

A hard drive fail will only stop the OS from loading not stop the entire PC/laptop from working.

LOL so wrong. if the hard drive has crashed it can stop the bios from loading. The OS in on the hard drive if the hard drive cannot boot to read the hard drive it will never read the OS

Erm, you can take a hard drive out of any computer in the world and if the motherboard is working it will still POST.

I'm sorry but if you dont know any of this stuff please dont post and mock those that clearly do :P

Ok well i dont know what computers you use but the BIOS is on the motherboard, it is the first thing that loads when you power on its called POST ( Power on, self test )

A PC or laptop can still power on and post with or without a hard drive.

"LOL so wrong. if the hard drive has crashed it can stop the bios from loading. The OS in on the hard drive if the hard drive cannot boot to read the hard drive it will never read the OS"

Hard drives work independently of BIOS which is a basic system inbuilt into motherboards they are not related in any way a broken hard drive will stop you loading any content(or os) on it but will not stop POST behaviour. It might "slow it down" but if it cannot find a device or struggles to initialise a device on a channel (sata/ida) it will time out after a period or give you a POST error.

Yes you are right the Bios has to post or as you say power on test. part of the post is the determine what is connected to the motherboard. What cpu is present how much memory in the unit, what the video card is what hard drive in present. If any of the post test fail it can stop the bios from fully posting and stop anything coming up on the screen.

Also user tend to say there is nothing on the screen when there is. Sometimes this can just be a small cursor on top left of the screen.

Its not AS you say lol it is POWER ON SELF TEST, perhaps you should look on Wikipedia as to what the process is

No one is saying that a hard drive failure can stop Windows from loading, what we are doing is correcting your comment that a hard drive can stop the whole machine working etc, which was your point.

Yes people giving mis-information is a pain. I can think of 20 people of the top of my head that know I right. I bad hard drive can stop laptop from pass POST.

For one it the power connector is damaged due to the hard drive been lose. it could short itself out, then bring down +12 VDC or the +5 VDC

It goes to be hard from laptop or pc to boot up with one of the main power lines down.

Ok look your obviously getting a little defensive, no one is arguing with you we are simply putting you right on your first comment regarding a hard drive stopping a machine from starting.

A hard drive is simply a peripheral it is not a necessity to make a pc or laptop power up.

I dont want to call bullshit really, but I have worked in IT for most of my adult life and have been building PC's since I was 12 (32 now), what you're describing is just not true and why your persisting with it is frankly bizzare. The simple fact of the matter is a motherboard WILL post regardless of the status of connected devices.

If the hard drive has broken a power connector (which I have never seen happen) then the motherboard wouldnt post but then again removing the hard drive would mean the motherboard still wont post so it makes your little secanrio invalid in the context of the advice you're giving.

I get it you're a hobbyist and im all for that but I have been doing this stuff professionally for over a decade and please understand when I say its wrong its not some forum point scoring exercise its just wrong.

Fully how my first backup link prove you wrong. Ok on a pc but the same rule still apply. In my 20 years as I full trained pc and laptop engineer I seen a few damaged power give this fault. I gave this fault as it is the easiest one to understand not very conman I give you but it happens.

How does it prove anything but there are lot of idiots out there building Pc's that don't know what they are doing and getting bad advice off other idiots ?

Unless you're standing in the room with them you can never tell what they have actually done so its impossible to tell its the hardest thing in the world trying to diagnose a complex computer issue over the internet.

I could show you internet forums where they believe in a magical man in the sky who wants us to live by a list of 10 things and if we don't we all go to burn in a fire pit for eternity.

As I said to start with, getting it to a specialist is the way to go not getting someone to start pulling bits out of the laptop to diagnose something I (and by the looks of the thread) others have never seen before.

I might be wrong but I thought he inferred he works in PC world earlier "I sold a customer a wireless printer and the know how boys couldn't get it to work".

I can only infer from that he works there or why would someone buy a wireless printer off you and not get you to set it up.

"Two links to back me up.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/290361-31-boot-hard-drive-connected-board-power

http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php?topic=116833.0

first link he got a POST screen.

Second I dunno but as he fixed it three posts later I'm going to suggest he might not be as competent as he wishes he was

"

From link one.

I was rebuilding a machine that got fried, old board/processor were no good. I got a new MB, power supply, processor, RAM, vid card. I installed everything, but the machine will not turn on if the old hard drive (WD sata drive) is connected to the power supply, let alone the sata cable to the board. If I unplug the power to the drive and turn the pc on, it posts . If I connect power to the drive, pressing the power button on the case does nothing.

So to get a post screen all he has to do it remove the power cable from the hard drive. with it in he get nothing. So he not getting a POST screen if the PC giving nothing at all with the hard drive plugged in.

As for the second one two PC one fixed the second still not working. After fitting a new hard drive.

Also,

Someone asking about a laptop problem where they get "nothing on a screen" that they have been running for a while is in no way related to a bunch of hobbyists (both of the links you posted) building new PC's.

Nothing has changed and no longer "booting" with a blank screen != as building a new custom PC and not being able to POST and the haphazard way they go about "fixing it".

I did try a really funny one once, Having exhausted all other options the GPU had gone on a laptop mobo and as a last resort i tried the reflow method !

Heat oven to 200 degrees, remove all plastic, processor and ram etc from mobo and cook for 7 - 8 mins in the oven.

It worked lmao !! NOW DO NOT try this at home kids lol it was all in the name of science lol, have tried it since and didnt work so not guarenteed

Yeah reflowing is a tried and tested method of fixing a lot of on the onboard GPU's on the HP lines, though I wouldn't use an oven (heat gun is more precision).

If you're daring you can fix all sorts of stuff reballing/reflowing (I have managed to fix a few red light of death PS3's doing it before).

Its just the chip soulder they use is cheap and horrible and after years of use it cracks and no long forms a solid head conducting connection.

btw Reflowing is a temp fix at best not a perm one

I was showing proof of my claim that a hard drive can stop a laptop from POSTing I also gave a reason why the fault might just started to happen i.e. a lost hard drive. so I say they both related.

"

Yeh i know lol it was a last resort but quite exciting lol !! Especially when i put it all back together and it worked lol !!

Agree about HP though !

I was showing proof of my claim that a hard drive can stop a laptop from POSTing I also gave a reason why the fault might just started to happen i.e. a lost hard drive. so I say they both related.

"

But the proof you provided were for desktop systems custom build desktop systems being built by idiots.

Not a laptop thats been running fine for X amount of time and one day just "stops" turning on.

Dees apples here are not the same as those oranges over there.

Its the Nvidia chips on the DV6000-dv9000's and a few other cross models (sonys and toshibas) they used a low quality soldier that just isnt up to being run for xxx years.

Its almost as if they built in a lifespan so people would be forced to upgrade, but they wouldn't be that cynical surely ?

haha yeah, PC world has a lot to answer for I was in my local the other day listening to one of the pc genius guys they have explaining the difference between RAM and ROM ive seen GSCE computer studies students explain it more accurately.

I have a dv6000 sitting upstairs that I need to finish a rebuild on, I have reflowed it but this one also has dud ribon cables which from what I have seen is another part that will "fail" after 2-3 years because they havent sealed them properly and then you get a laptop that wont switch on.

Laptops universally are designed to last about 2-3 year I would say unless its an ACER or HP and they just churn out shite.

It is a shame that such a high profile national chain can so badly advise people ! Looked at their site the other day and they had a PC on there for a £1000 !!!!

I could build better spec ( and better components for that matter ) for not far of half the price !

Why would you sell a home user a PC with 16GB of ram ffs !!! lol

"

first link he got a POST screen.

"

I point you where wrong he did not get a post test with the hard drive in. You said nothing about that after been wrong about it.

"

Yes you are right the Bios has to post or as you say power on test.

"

I missed the word self out.

POST = power on self test.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power-on_self-test

Yes desktop system any computer engineer will know that all most of diagnostics cross over between both systems. They are not apples and oranges. For one they work on the same basic architecture. Odd that do not know this basic fact.

So a desktop that will not power up and not bring any up on the screen due to a bad hard drive is same as a laptop not booting up. As it could that the PC gave spinning fans only so it did have some power. user every often say not booting up or not powering up as the same thing, odd you do not know this as well.

like I said I worked there, I did not say now long for. Unlike some people I want to work and not sit on bum all day. So I bet you will say that once worked making cable all day is more proof of now better you than me and fixing laptops.

I have proven a number of your post wrong.

Just love all of this technical stuff when one of the original posts said her laptop was " fucked" personally wouldn't have even thought about removing hard drive without asking if there were any lights on while charging or if there were any beeps when first switched on or even if the fan started lol

In all the years i have been fixing PC's and laptops not ONCE have i ever seen a faulty hard drive stop a pc / laptop from powering up ( providing all cables and connectors are correctly in place )

The main cause of a blank screen are, faulty or badly seated RAM , inverter gone , GPU failed, LCD failed , cable connection to LCD failed.

But i have never seen a hard drive totally stop a pc or laptop to power up or post.

A hard drive is a peripheral device and does not affect the initial POST process or power up.

You can buy them on ebay for around £10-40 depending on the model.

Inspirons rinse through battery life though.

You can try the freezer trick too (to restore a battery) if you're confident enough but you get quite varying success rates with that!

+1

This has rapidly become the most odd and depressing forum argument I have ever been involved with.
