Nice Dutch towns - suggestions please?

London

We are visiting some clubs in Holland this weekend, but want to go somewhere else first before we go into clubbing mode for the weekend.

We want to keep it easy to get to via train from Schipol, which is probably almost anywhere, also this will avoid the hustle of Amsterdam for the day. We were thinking of going to and staying in a smaller town on Thursday. Someone suggested Leden was very nice.

Be keen to hear thoughts from other travellers on places they have been.

Its just we've done Amsterdam before, and we are looking for somewhere else for a change.

Good to hear others think Leiden is a good suggestion, its easy to get to from the Airport to. (Which is nice)

Cheers Fabio, I was there last year, and we need to stay close to Holland and get back the same night, as we are going to Fun on Saturday.

We think Leiden is probably the choice.

We are going to Arnhem and Deventer after the weekend (I did the Market Garden thing last year) really loved it.

Looking more towards places like Breda, Utrecht etc the latter of which is suppose to be very nice.

Maastricht for me or Roermond, many happy memories of my time stationed just over the border in Germany, Holland is great place wherever you go.

little house on the praire

There's a small town in Holland about 40 minutes from the Belgium border, has a lovely fish restaurant an up market sex cinema on the high street and a windmill in the middle of the town, very busy on a Sunday though. Its called course or something

Utrecht is good, there are some good restaurants alongside the river which runs through the centre , it's a bit different because the river runs in a channel about 20 feet bow the ground level, so the restaurants are below you.

As has been said, Arnhem , Nijmegen, Oosterbeek are good for history buffs.

Leiden is great but you will see it all in 10 minutes. If the weather is nice (unlikely) you might want to go to the coast near Leiden (can cycle there) in Katwjik or Noordwjik (not sure about spelling).

Alternatively, take train to Antwerp and enjoy Belgium hospitality instead.

So much love for my country, I love it!

I can't argue with the suggestions given, they're all nice places and the country is well connected by train. The only place I would not recommend is Rotterdam, it's just not a nice city and the connection is quite poor for some reason.

Additionally, in some cases it is just as fast to get to some nice cities in Belgium as it is to venture further north or east in the Netherlands. I mean if you get the chance to go to Gent or Brugge, it's lovely.

Costa Blanca Spain...

For smaller towns Gouda (especially if you like cheese) is nice and next to FF2. Also although it was quite a few years ago when we were last there we enjoyed Delft, and as others have said Utrecht is a great place.

Delft is lovely because of the Vermeer museum and the pottery, of course. Also Haarlem because of the lovely square and the Franz Hals Museum
