How common is it for a male to get a std from a blow job? My understanding is that it is very uncommon and its the woman at biggest risk as the giver.

It is possible but it is hard to measure, a guy showing up at a clinic with an STI is unlikely to have only engaged in oral sex.

But he has probably used a condom for full sex but not for oral. When I meet I have never given oral to a guy with a condom but I never have sex without one.

Chances are at some point he will have had unprotected sex with someone, is more what I meant. Not all STIs show up in a short time scale. I guess it depends what it is.

Thanks for replying to my post but none of the points answer my original question?

Not really sure how to answer it sorry. There is no figure for probability that a man will get an STI from oral.

Agreed...I have never just received oral without having sexual intercourse shortly after. Good question though

" In regards to receiving oral sex, this is very low risk for HIV and most other STD's. The primary STD risk here is for Herpes infection. If a person giving you oral sex has an oral Herpes lesion on their lip (also known as a "cold sore"), they can transmit the Herpes virus to your penis/vagina. Herpes can be transmitted by direct oral-genital contact with the Herpes lesion.Other than this, the risks are actually quite small for STD's when receiving oral sex.Giving oral sex is another matter. Giving oral sex poses a significant risk for several STD's.1) There is a risk for HIV infection. See the posting, "Can you get HIV through oral sex?" for an explanation of the risks here.2) The Hepatitis B virus is transmitted the same way as HIV, only it is much more infectious than HIV. The information that applies for HIV transmission, also applies for Hepatitis B transmission. However, the risks for Hepatitis B are even greater than the risks for HIV.3) There is also a risk for Gonorrhea when giving oral sex. If you give someone oral sex, and they have Gonorrhea, you could get infected with Gonorrhea in the throat. Gonorrhea can cause a discharge that can be very infectious if it gets into the throat (or penis/rectum/vagina) of another person. This is much more likely to occur when giving a man oral sex, although giving a woman oral sex can also pose a risk for Gonorrhea (although to a lesser extent).4) Herpes can also be transmitted this way. If a person has a Herpes lesion on their penis/vagina, and you give them oral sex, you can get oral Herpes this way (also known as a "cold sore").There are other STD's that can be transmitted by giving oral sex, such as syphilis and HTLV-I infection. But transmission for these diseases through oral sex does not occur as often as the STD's discussed above. In summary, receiving oral sex poses a very low risk for most STD's. But giving oral sex can put a person at risk for a number of STD infections."

In short the giver is at greater risk than the receiver, regardless of gender.

Through this site, and others like it, there must be hundreds of BJ's given every day. Surely the percentage resulting in a STD must be insignificant or we'd be reading about an epidimic? I have given lots of BJ's and have never considered that hubby is at risk when i give him oral.

The women would have an std herself if this is the case so if the guy has caught something & the lady giving him oral is in the clear then he is playing away unprotected.

You can catch clamidia from just oral and this is one of those sti that does not have a lot of symptoms so can go unnoticed for a long time

It is also possible to show symptoms after oral sex which are due to an unspecified group of bugs called Mycobacteriae. These are not STI's but commensals living in the oral cavity which, in some individuals appear as discharge or irritation.

I discussed this issue with my GUD clinic. They said whilst it is possible for some STIs to survive in a woman's throat the probability of transfer to a male through a BJ is low. However, the GUDC deal in absolutes so if for example 1:500 (made up probability) catches something they will be concerened.

They also said the statistical probability of a male catching a STI from a female during penatrative sex is much less than the other way round.
