What others have said.

Start small (fingers/toys) and work up. Lube lube and more lube. Bit more lube. Take it slow. Bit more lube. And relax. Try not to be tensed up and anxious.

Sometimes it is just not happening. I tried once, sooooo painful, felt like a vice was clamped around me. Used loads of lube, took ages, so uncomfortable.

She agreed, it was not working.

So, I would say take time, use lube, do not be in fear of failure.

Make sure you're clean via a douche...it'll be better for you and your partner.

If you're partner is up for it get them to rim you for a bit. It's amazing how much this can get you to relax.

Have your partner lube up a finger and play with your hole on the outside. I recommend you be face down and arse up for this. As you start to enjoy the sensation your natural reaction will be to push back against the finger and before you know it it will be inside you. Add another finger when you feel comfortable.

Since you're straight I'm going to assume you're taking a toy and not a cock. Introduce a SMALL toy next. Same approach...playing on the outside only and pushing back when ready.

If you want to try something larger - go for it

Just remember, you can never have too much lube!

Never use baby oil with condoms. It has to be water based lube. KY jelly is fine but you can also buy specific anal lube. Also avoid flavoured lubes to be used as lubes.

What does baby oil do to condoms? I use it a lot when meeting guys to give extra lubrication. Now im worried i could have picked up a nasty wee surprise

It rots the condoms... Any oil based lubricant will.

As most state...lube, lube then more lube. To be honest, inserting objects to get used to it wont work unless you leave them up there for quite a while (the anal muscles will just contract to your normal size if its just a quick in and out with a finger or two).

As for position...the best is foetal (on your side, legs curled up). This makes for easy access.

Above all, dont try and take to much at once, slowly does it. Just an inch at a time and plenty of resting between each penetrative push.

Did i mention lube????

Done that and now I brought a device that fits to the hose and has a simple valve on it. Works a a treat.

Next is LUBE BY THE BUCKET.

Pop to your local adult store or search online stores for training sets, they are butt plugs in several sizes so you can progress at your own pace. I have a very flexible plug that I wear for a few hours while walking etc, brilliant as my rear is relaxed and opened up well in advance. I can take 10inches length and 5 girth now. And it can be fantastic, but remember its how well they use it thats important.
