Edinburgh

This is a bit of a long-winded question from someone who's fairly new to FabSwingers, who's quite introverted and probably on the spectrum.

I've been on here for about a year now-ish, messaged hundreds, probably well over 600 different people by now. I've had plenty of conversations that seemed to be going really well, then after a few weeks or a month they just... poof... stop altogether. It's always left me wondering what happened.

But I think I've finally managed to arrange meeting someone. I say I hope, because there was a little hiccup the previous week. We were supposed to meet, then on the day she messaged saying she'd come down with a stomach bug. We've still been chatting since then, the banter seems friendly enough, and she says she still wants to meet, so hopefully it happens. You never really know until you're actually there.

It's a bit of a step into the unknown as well. Her profile has no pictures and barely any information on it, so I kind of took a leap in the dark. She does have quite a few friends on her profile though, which, in a way, gives me a little reassurance that she's a genuine person. I know it's generally easier for women to build up connections and verifications on here than it is for men, but it still helped put my mind at ease a little.

Anyway, it got me thinking...

How do people generally go about meeting someone from FabSwingers?

I know everyone's different, but I'm more curious about the overall process than any intimate details.

Do you usually chat on the site for a while, then swap over to WhatsApp or another messaging app?

Do you meet for a drink, coffee or meal first?

Do you meet at a social? And when people say "social", what do they actually mean? A club? A bar? A munch? An organised event? Somewhere like After Dark in Edinburgh? Or something completely different?

Or do some people just go straight from messaging to meeting at somebody's house, either yours or theirs?

If you do meet for a drink or food first, is it generally a "let's see if we click" kind of meeting, then decide what happens afterwards? Or do most people already know exactly what they're looking for before they even meet?

I'm asking because, unlike FetLife, where I've spent most of my time, FabSwingers feels very different.

On FetLife, people generally have much more detailed profiles. You get a better idea of who they are before you even message them. On FabSwingers I can't really fit a profile that explains me properly, and it sometimes feels like people only read the first few lines before deciding whether to move on, almost like looking through CVs. If those first few lines aren't exactly what they're looking for, they just skip to the next profile.

I'm not criticising anyone. It's just that the two sites seem to work very differently.

To me, FetLife feels more like a friendly, sociable kink community that may also lead to something more. FabSwingers feels much more direct, much faster paced, and a lot more extroverted.

When people say, "Come along to a social," for someone like me who's introverted and on the spectrum, it honestly feels like walking into a lion's den. I don't really know what I'm supposed to do or what people expect. My appearance probably doesn't help either, thanks to genetics making me look a lot younger than I actually am.

I'm one of those people who likes understanding how things work. Having an idea of what people generally do helps me relax a bit. I know every meeting is different and there's no single "correct" way of doing things, but having a rough understanding helps ease the anxiety.

You don't need to tell me anything private or intimate. I'm just interested in the overall flow, from the first message, to moving off the site, to meeting in person. What does that usually look like for you?

Thanks if you managed to read all of this. I'd really appreciate hearing how things tend to work for other people and how you usually approach meeting someone from here.

Well... I got most of the way through writing the post above, only to get a message from the person I was supposed to be meeting today.

Unfortunately, the meeting has been cancelled again.

The funny thing is, this is now the second week in a row, and both times it happened only a couple of hours before we were due to meet.

Last week it was because she had a stomach bug, apparently from something she'd eaten the night before. Fair enough, these things happen. Although I did wonder, if you'd been feeling rough all morning, maybe you'd have mentioned something a little earlier than two hours before we were supposed to meet. At least then I could've made other plans for the day.

This week it was because her auntie had come out of hospital, and her cousin couldn't look after her, so she had to go instead.

Again, completely understandable if that's genuinely what's happened. Family always comes first.

It's just left me feeling a bit deflated because I'd already checked with her yesterday to make sure everything was still okay before making any other plans. I kept my whole day free because I was genuinely looking forward to meeting her for some food, a drink and a chat. I'd already turned my friends down because I thought I had plans, so by the time I got the message, everyone else was already busy too.

The thing that's making me wonder isn't really this one cancellation by itself. It's the pattern.

Has anyone else experienced this? You chat on here, things seem to be going well, you move over to WhatsApp because it's easier to talk there, everything seems promising, then the day finally comes... and it gets cancelled right at the last minute. Maybe once. Maybe twice. Sometimes people just disappear altogether.

Is that fairly common on FabSwingers?

I'm not accusing this woman of anything. She may well be completely genuine, and life might simply have got in the way twice in a row. It happens.

I suppose I'm asking because I've also come across people online over the years who seem to enjoy chatting, making plans, then cancelling or disappearing before you ever actually meet. After you've experienced that a few times, it's difficult not to start questioning whether you're just unlucky or whether this is simply part of online dating and hookup sites.

I'd be interested to hear other people's experiences. Have you had this happen? How do you tell the difference between someone who's genuinely interested but life keeps getting in the way, and someone who was never really intending to meet in the first place?

Maybe I'm just overthinking it because of previous experiences, but I'd genuinely like to hear what other people think.

I've always said that the right people are always willing to share pictures with out them being requested.

Anyone can have picture on their profile, it doesn't have to be your face.

To me....you're describing a red flag account.

Meet in a way that you're comfortable with, it doesn't matter how other people do it. We used to meet for a coffee or a drink often more than once then move on to more at another date if we all agreed. Others don't differently

The account you've described was probably never going to meet you. Try to only contact people who have realistic photos and one or two verifications in future

Hi op, give up on that profile and block now. Never give more than 2 chances to waste your time.

I would take a punt that they weren't who they claimed to be, especially if you can't really see much of them from their pics.

It's tough just relying on here, so many people standing others up lately.

I don't know what to suggest if a social event is off the cards.

I'm half a couple & we've done much better meeting others at clubs and socials.

Personally I'd ever even chat to a profile if I can't see them and i go with my gut. If I got bad vibes when they cancelled first time, they wouldn't have got another chance with me.

All I can say is be vigilant. If it seems too good to be true, it generally is.

Ask them to do a quick call with you if in any doubt, don't put up with just anyone, to get a meet..

I'm dyspraxic so I find things over whelming at times, but the socials I've attended have always been really friendly affairs.

I would give up on the person that has let you down twice. Quite clear that they will keep doing it.

As for chats ending, it's normally because they have moved on to someone else and can easily drop you like a stone.

Keep plugging away, there is soneone for everyone here and you will probably find it when you least expect it.

Wish you all the best op.
