Hi so I've been gently flirting with a woman who works in a cafe i regularly go for lunch at.

I'm trying to gently build a light hearted rapport with her and at some point want to ask for out or see if she wants my number.

Trouble is how do you do this without being that creepy bloke who hits on staff who have no choice but to be there and smile at there customers?

Ask her when her day off is and say that you want to take her to a swingers' event.

That's exactly what I suggested that a girl friend who I took for cafe lunch today should do, when the waitress started getting flirty with her!

I mean that would at least give her something laugh about for the rest of her shift

I would probably ask another staff member discreetly what the deal is r.e single etc, and if cool i would just say do you mind if i give you my number? I would love to spend some time with you

If she says no say no worries, i understand

It's a difficult one because as you have already identified she has no choice but to smile and he nice.

Do you feel she's interested or is she just being friendly, how do you know she's single and what will you do if she turns you down?

I would say find out if she's single, move the conversation on to what she does in her spare time then say something like there's a bar, pub or similar you were thinking of try would she like to join you.

As it’s a cafe order a flat white then ask if she wants a stiff white.

Or just ask her. Be polite and direct.

Other than getting my friend to ask her if she is single (which is a bit like being back at school!) I could use some subtle questions to sense if she is single ..

You need to be direct.

"Did you do anything nice with your partner at the weekend?"

" Have you and your partner got any holiday plans ?"

You can't hint or rely on other people.

If she's got anything about her she will know why you're asking. Even if she doesn't have a partner if she isn't interested she can say she has avoiding embarrassment for both of you.

I’d just go for a direct question - “listen, a bit of an awkward question but: I don’t suppose you’re single?”

Down the back of the sofa.

The answer is you don’t.

You don’t go to work to be asked out.

a village near Haywards Heath in East Sussex

I used to use a local dry cleaners . The attractive woman who took my clothes always asked for my phone number . Thing is she never rang me.
