If it is purely to bypass age verification, then OperaGX Web browser has a free VPN plug in you can turn on. It a bit slow, but you can play a video through it or browse in a couple of tabs easy enough. We wouldn't recommend a free van for day to day or confidential use though.

Proton is very good, I have only used the paid version but they have a free one too, although I'm not sure what the limitations are.

Or... you could just download Tor browser which will, if you use normal URLs, redirect your traffic via the 'dark net', back to the normal net.

If you just want to bypass age verification then lots of browsers have built in VPNs. For anything else paid for is best. But do your research before handing over your hard earned cash.
