I can also see status updates of the people I blocked, if I go into my blocked list. So if the person blocks you back, OP, they will be able to see that, too.

It's nothing unusual, happens regularly, I'd say. I regularly block people I have never spoken to, for a variety of reasons. For example, they keep sending me winks or friends requests without even a message. They keep looking at my profile. Their profile pic or status update gives me the "ick". They post on the forum that they're into bareback/breeding or have some very controversial opinions. And so on.

Just block back and move on.

I've blocked people due to comments on forums and status updates they posted that tells me they are not for me. There are lots of reason someone may have blocked you.

If they are local maybe it's someone who knows you or they may block everyone they feel are too close in distance to them etc.

Here we block some people based on forum comments which mean that we're not compatible at all. That spares everyone a potentially super awkward and uncomfortable meet.
