We had a meet recently arranged through Fab. The final arrangements were done by phone, all went well, end of story. Until today, when they appeared on a Facebook friend suggestion and presumably, I did for them. In this case there is no issue but that may not always be the case. Can I adjust FB settings to stop it searching my phone/Whatsapp or do I need to buy a burner.

Some phones have an E-SIM option, which gives you the option of a second phone number, on the same handset. I don't use Facebook but would be considering a separate number, to prevent being traced, if I did. I'm sure others can help, with what settings you may be able to adjust.

Don't give FB consent to be able to have your contacts

Should be something in the privacy settings which you could adjust

settings

Otherwise uninstall the application then don't accept the permission

Facebook Will not allow you to stop it seeing your contact's and WhatsApp is owned by Facebook. Unfortunately in a word you can't stop it.

Only way is to have a second SIM in the phone and no Facebook account on that phone number

It's scary as part of the terms of using Facebook allows them total access to your location history photos phone contact's payments browsing history just to name a few

Must admit I do love the block button on Facebook

At least that will stop them seeing anything to do with you & can also be unblocked at any time.

Make sure only friends or friends of friends can see your friends etc

I don't know if they had your real name, if so they may have searched you on FB and looked at your profile as I understand that FB does suggest people who have looked at you as possible friends.

Dual sim phones with a cheap amazon sim are the future.

Yes it's in the privacy settings... "Who can Facebook suggest your profile to based on your phone number or email address". Then search engine options below/after that

It is because of the phone number being shared

Don't put your phone number on social media and lock your profile down (privacy settings) don't use the same pics on here/via message that you have also used on social media.

That has happened to me with a couple of people. Must be to do with phone being on the same mast while in a meet or the like

So the key bit here for me was the final arrangements were done by phone. At that point your number and their numbers are linked and the algorithms go to work to establish connections.

As others have said buying a SIM or burner may help, but the algorithms work very well and could potentially link other key information, so whilst limiting the links it does not eliminate them.

E.g

phone number 1 linked to X device on x isp

Phone number 2 linked to X device on x isp. Who contacts phone number 3.

The systems may still link phone 1 and 2 and cross match suggested contacts, for phone number 3.

In the end the systems are not trying to expose you as swingers, they are trying to say 1 knows 2 who also knows 3. So 1 and 3 may also get along.

This is what we have. Cannot believe anyone thinks it's a good idea to share their primary number with strangers.
