Swinger Sexual Health Project

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help. I am trying to develop a project that would help open up sexual health services for the swinging community. I am looking to get in touch with any sexual health nurses/clinicians/organizations who might be able to help talk through the project with me. I’m drawing a blank from the main sexual health charities and clinical leads in various areas. Looking at the various posts on this forum, sexual health support for our community appears to be very much a lottery. Any helpful contacts would be much appreciated!

Anyone can attend a sexual health clinic or order a test kit online to get tested for everything, there is nothing different between a swinger or anyone else. A hell of a lot of swingers are regularly tested anyway. What do you think a "swingers sexual health project" would offer that any other sexual health clinic doesn't?

I understand what you are saying, but from work already carried out there continues to be a lot of stigma experienced by those who have attended clinics. There is also a lack of availability of free home testing that is afforded to other sexual communities.

It's a bit of a postcode lottery as to whether you can get access to the free home testing as well as the free condoms online, however I have found no stigma surrounding being a swinger or not being one when using a sexual health clinic myself, nor has anyone I know of. If anything swingers take their sexual health more seriously

Durham

I mean, it feels like the bigger issue is that there is an NHS funding crisis and sexual health is one of the areas that has suffered most? My partner lives in Newcastle, and it’s much easier for me to access testing in Durham than it is for him, the postcode lottery is very real

I’m puzzled - There are no restrictions to sexual communities rather they target at risk groups (I.e. gay men with Prep - Terence Higgins trust I believe and another for Uni students under 24..)In addition to clinics the majority of postcodes are covered by free home test kit schemes like SH:24, SH:UK, Brook.org.uk (there are still gaps in coverage) check https://www.sexwise.org.uk/where-to-get-help/free-online-services - these services don’t record ‘sexual community’ data, just what type of sex you have to figure out if you need anal / vaginal swabs. There is a sexual health link at the bottom of the Fab webpage that navigates to useful resources to but the Sexwise site is easier to find your provider. Not sure any duplication of these services are necessary but raising awareness and encouraging the swinger community to use them IS worthwhile

Maybe that is what the OP means then, a general lack of sexual health facilities in his area rather than it being swinger specific

Not always where I'm from they have goten rid of the early morning drop in testing at the hospital and the sex clinic there is no longer avalable for testing. And instead have a seris of clinics that are after open certain Hours sand is difficult to get an appointment. Many people from outside the city that used the drop in clinic now they have use to local services that are almost non existent and maybe difficult to book.

So have a service like this that you can get get tested in private. Would be a good send to many.

Do you have experience or expertise in sexual health, OP? If not, I'm not sure health professionals would talk to you.

Also, what are your proposals re funding?

And how does swinger sexual health differ from general promiscuous sex amongst e.g. horny singletons?

It's not free and easy testing access for all. There's very much a postcode lottery. We live in a large Greater Manchester town, but pretty much cannot access testing. There's no free postal testing here from any provider, unless under 25 and needing Chlamydia screening.

This is a quote from the "not for profit social enterprise" that runs the local sexual health physical clinic, which is only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays (during the working day):

"Spectrum’s clinics operate an appointment only service (we are not able to see patients without an appointment). Some appointments may be offered as telephone consultations.

Please contact our clinic to make an appointment.

Once you have registered with us, you can also book an appointment online. Our clinic staff will advise you of the information you need to share with us in order to register, including a form of ID."

The telephone number is constantly engaged and so unless you've been before and provided photo ID(!), it's nigh on impossible. There's no walk in option. You can't book online the first time you go. The only drop in clinic is again aimed at young people and that DOES open the occasional evening. But no use when you are 37.

So, additional provision for ANY adults over 25 would be welcome here.

Prepp is now available to women/vagina owners. Previously it was only available to sex workers or intravenous drug users, but now we can get prepp if we have bisexual men as sexual partners.

Apologies for hijaking this post, but taking the opportunity to get this info out there.

TRUE. And the free test at home kit for women in my area gives you one vaginal swab and a blood finger prick test. So no testing for rectal or throat. Which is frankly pathetic in my opinion

Similar (lack of) services here.

Apparently people should only get tested if their bits turned green and shrivelled up. And even then don't bother.

When we order our test kits it asks if we have multiple partners and asks questions about if we’d need Prep. I didn’t find any issues, must be lucky in our local area

In Cornwall we have a postal service, it's really discrete and efficient.

I am surprised that clubs don't get given a supply of free condoms. It would be a no brainer to have lots lying around.

I appreciate all of the comments and the suggestions – in such a short space of time – brilliant. I do think Silver Fux, Boxes, Kinky Couple2020 and Secretscape highlight a number of the key issues! Thank you.

There is no free postal service in our area. We test regularly and use a paid for service

For us this is an associated lifestyle cost and we don’t believe that it should be borne by the NHS, postal or drop in.

I appreciate that this may well be controversial, but there are nationwide private testing via post that ranges from £20 upwards depending on the service, panel range and swabs. Given that this lifestyle is my choice, I budget for testing just as I do outfits etc, just like funding any other hobby.

A Google of STi panel comes up with a myriad of links. I’ve used test.me, boots and Lloyds which were all efficient.

I can see this being a good option for those that can afford it, but if I wanted testing once every 6 weeks Inc throat and rectal swabs it is well over £100

Why should the NHS foot the bill for your lifestyle choices?

This. Many assume that what is available to them is available to everyone (free testing kits etc.). Postcode lottery. Can't help with your question OP but totally understand why you are doing this. Well done.

Same could be said about smokers and drinkers. Where do you draw the line ? The NHS is funded by the tax payer so you can’t deny anyone access just because of their lifestyle.

Depends where you live. I asked about other preventions available and was told hepatitis only. Nothing else available to women.
